Activity 1. Linear Equation

The document contains exercises on systems of linear equations in two and three variables, including identifying the nature of the systems (consistent/independent, consistent/dependent, inconsistent) and verifying solutions for given ordered pairs. It also includes methods for solving systems using substitution, elimination, and comparison methods, along with examples and solutions. Additionally, it presents solution sets for specific systems of linear equations.

Name: Aileen Justine C. Ramos Score:
A. Without solving, determine whether the equations in the following systems are
consistent and independent, consistent and dependent, or inconsistent.

1. 3x + 9y = 7
3x – 7y = 2
Answer: Consistent and independent

2. 4x – 4y = -3
2x – 2y = 11
Answer : Inconsistent

3. 2x + 3y = 5
6x + 9y = 15
Answer: Consistent and dependent

B. Determine whether the given ordered pair ( x, y) is a solution of the given system of
equations. System Ordered pair

2x – y = -1

= 0 + 3(1) = 4
3≠4

Not a solution

2. x – 4y = 0 (x , y) = (-2 , -1)
x – y = -9
-2 – 4(-1) = -2 + 4 = 2
2≠0

C. Solve the following system of linear equations using the substitution method and
check using the comparison method.
Checking
7x  3y  17 7x + 3(1) = 17 7(2)+3(1)=17
x
1. 2y 7x+3=17 14+3=17
7x = 17 – 3 17 = 17

Solution : 7(2y) + 3y = 17 7x = 14

14y + 3y = 17 x=2

17y = 17

Y=1

2. x2y 5x = 2 +4y 3(2+4y)=10y 2/3(-3)
Solution: 5((2/3)y)-4y=2 (2 + 4y)/5 = (2/3)y 6+12y = 10y x = -6/3
(10/3y – 4y = 2 6 = -2y x = -2

3. y1x x = 4y – 1 2x = -7y x = 4y-1
2(4y-1)+7y = 0 4(2/15)-1 (-7/2)y = 4y – 1 x = 4(2/15) - 1
8y-2 + 7y = 0 x = 8/15 – 1 -7y = 8y – 2 – 15y = - 2 x = 8/15 - 1
15y = 2 x = -7 / 15 y = 2/15 x = -7/15
y = 2/15

D. Solve the following system of linear equations using elimination by addition.

2x  y  4 2x + 2 + 4
2
1. x  2 y  2 2x = 4 - 2
Solution: 2x + y ) – (2x – 2y) = 4 – (-2) 2x = 2
2x + y – 2x + 2y = 6 x=1
3y = 6
Y=2

xy7 x–y=7
2
2. x  2 y  2 x –(-3) = 7
Solution: x+3=7
2 * (x – y) = 2 * 7 x=7-3
2x – 2y = 14 – 2 x=4
2x – 2y-2x-2y = 12
-4y = 12
Y=-3

E. Find the solution sets of the following systems of linear equations.

x  2 y  3z  1
1.  z  5 y  7z  5
4 y  3z  5
Solution:
(x + 2y + 3z ) + (-x + 5y + 7z ) = -1 + 5
7y + 10 z = 4(5)
(-10 / 3 ) ( 4y + 3z) = (-10/3)(5)
40y/3 – 10z = -50/3
3(7y + 10z) = 3 (4)
21y + 30z = 12

(-40y/3 + 21y) + (-10z + 30z) = -50/3 + 12

- 40y + 63y)/3 + 20 z = (-50 + 36 ) / 3
23y/3 + 20z = - 14/3
23y + 60z = - 14 (6)

23((5 – 3 3z)/4 ) + 60z = 14

23 (5-3z ) + 240z = -56
171z = -171
Z = -1

Y = ( 5 – 3 ) /4
Y = (5-3(-1))4 = 5
= 5 + 3 ) /4 = (5+3)/4
=8/4=2
x  3y  2z  5
2. 2. 3x  z  1
2x  y  3z  4

Z = 1 – 3x
X + 3y – 2(1-3x)
X + 3y – 2 + 6x = -5
7x + 3y = -3 (4)2x +y – 3(1-3x)= -4
2x + y - 3 + 9x = -4
11x + y = -1

-33x-3y=3
(7x – 33x) + (3y – 3y = 3 + 3 – 2
6x = 0
