Name: _________________________ Class: ______ ( ) Marks: _______/ 30

Time allowed: 25 minutes

Unless otherwise specified, numerical answers should be either exact or correct to 3 significant
figures.

1. The figure below shows the position of an object and its image formed by a lens (not shown).
The distance between the object and the image is 45 cm.

(a) By adding a suitable light ray on the figure, find the position of the lens and draw the lens
on the figure. (2 marks)
(b) By adding a suitable light ray on the figure, find the focal length of the lens. (2 marks)

(b) Figure 2.2 shows the position of the bird in front of the lens. F and F’ are the foci of the
lens. p and q are light rays from the bird.

Figure 2.2

Draw suitable light rays in Figure 2.2 to construct the image of the bird (denote it as I )
formed by the lens. Also, complete light rays p and q in Figure 2.2. (3 marks)
3. An object is placed in front of a lens as shown in Figure 3.1. p and q are two light rays from the
object.

Figure 3.1

(a) (i) In Figure 3.1, draw suitable light rays to construct the image formed by the lens
(denote it as I ) and complete the path of light ray p. (2 marks)

(ii) Hence find the focal length of the lens. (1 mark)

(b) Describe the change of size of the image and the distance between the image and the lens
if the object is moved slightly away from the lens. (2 marks)

4. Anthony uses the set-up to study the image formation of a convex lens of focal length 6 cm. He
puts an illuminated letter ‘F’ 1.5 cm in front of the lens as shown in Figure 4.1. A translucent
screen is placed 12 cm away from the lens.

(b) Anthony finds that the image cannot be captured by the screen. If the screen is moved to
the distance found in (a) from the lens, can he capture the image on the screen? Explain
briefly. (2 marks)
