MA121 Problem Set 9

This document is a problem set for a Differential Equations course at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology. It includes various tasks related to classifying partial differential equations (PDEs), forming PDEs from given conditions, and solving specific PDEs for functions of multiple variables. The problems cover a range of topics including linearity, order, and the elimination of arbitrary constants and functions.

each of the following.

i) 2u = ( ax + y)2 + b ii) u = ( x − a)2 + (y − b)2

iii) u = ax + by + axy

5. Form at least two distinct first order partial differential equations by eliminating the arbitrary con-
stant a from each of the following.

i) u = axy ii) u = ax2 + a2 y + z

constants a, b and c from each of the following.

i) u = ax + by + cxy ii) ax2 + by2 + cz2 = 1

iii) z = ax2 + bxy + cy2

7. Form a first order partial differential equation by eliminating the arbitrary constants a, b and c from
u = ax + by + cz.

the following.
