Introduction to Partial Differential Equations

1. Classify the following partial differential equations (linear, semi-linear, quasi-linear,
fully non-linear) and find their orders.
 1
∂2 u ∂u 2 ∂u ∂u
a) ∂x2
= 1+ ∂y b) u ∂x + ∂y =x
∂u

= u + xy d) xy ∂u 2 ∂u 2 2 2
c) ∂x ∂y ∂x + x ∂y = x y u

e) ( x2 − yu) ∂u 2 2
∂x + ( y − ux ) ∂y = u − xy
∂u
f) ∂u
∂x + ∂u ∂y =1

g) ∂u ∂x
∂u
∂y = u h) u xx + uyy = 0

i) uu x + ut = u xx j) utt − u xx + u2 = 0
k) u xx + uyy + sin u = 0 l) u xx + uyy + sin u u x = 0
m) u xx + uyy + u x uy = 0 n) u + u x uy + u xyz = x + y + z

2. Find a first order partial differential equation satisfied by the system of spheres whose
centre is lying on xy-plane and radius is unity.

3. Find a first order partial differential equation of the family of planes, the sum of whose
x, y, z intercepts is unity.

4. Form a first order partial differential equation by eliminating the arbitrary constants a
and b from each of the following.

a) 2u = ( ax + y)2 + b b) u = ( x − a)2 + (y − b)2

c) u = ax + by + axy

5. Form at least two distinct first order partial differential equations by eliminating the
arbitrary constant a from each of the following.

a) u = axy b) u = ax2 + a2 y + z

6. Form at least two distinct second order partial differential equations by eliminating
the arbitrary constants a, b and c from each of the following.

a) u = ax + by + cxy b) ax2 + by2 + cz2 = 1

c) z = ax2 + bxy + cy2

7. Form a first order partial differential equation by eliminating the arbitrary constants
a, b and c from u = ax + by + cz.
