Rationale
Public schools offer child friendly, affordable, clean and healthy environment where
students can feel at home, comfortable and safe. Intended to people that are not financially
stable where education is given for free. However, students have requirements and one of
those is bringing of floor wax. Aside from its irritating smell, that causes the students not to
breathe well, it doesn’t even last long that it takes up the students to apply 3-4 times of floor
wax to maintain the cleanliness and the glossiness of the floor in a month/year whereas it
incurs a lot of money to a student.
We plan to carry out the best alternative product to minimize the cost of buying floor
wax, eradicate the bad smell of the common floor wax that is harmful in our nasal system
and even help conserve the environment and the health of the consumers in a
natural/organic way.
Aside from this, the researcher does not only help the environment but also through
this, the researcher promotes the other uses of coconut which may lead to the promotion
and utilization of coconut industry.
The study aims to determine the efficiency of coco-wax as an alternative for commercial
floor wax.
2.) What is the efficiency of coco-wax and commercial floor wax in terms of the following?
2.1) Usability
2.2) Cost
2.3) Odor
3.) Does the effect of the following floor wax long lasting?
3.1) 1 day
3.2) 2 days
3.3) 3 days
Related Studies
Floor wax is a wax-based preparation used to finish and polish floors. It ismeant to
increase hardness and glossiness in flooring and create resistance againstslips and scuff
marks. The benefits that waxing can provide is that it helps floorslast longer by protecting
them from materials that scratches, marks, nicks and spillstains. Waxing also adds shine to
floors which can brighten and give off a squeakyclean appearance. It can also diminish the
appearance of grooves and faultsespecially in wooden floors. In a proffesional environment
such as offices, restaurants, hospitals or any medical centre that undergoes a lot of foot
traffic (Jan-Pro, 2016).
Cocos nucifera is commonly known as coconut palm which is a member ofthe palm tree
family (Arecaceae) and literally has many uses but is most well-known for the products of its
fruit, such as coconut milk, coconut water andcoconut oil. Coconut milk is generally
extracted from grated coconut meat after pressing or squeezing with or without the addition
of water (Patil & Benjakul, 2018)
According to the National Candle Association (2019), Over the centuries, candle waxes
have been developed from a variety of fats, oils and waxy-like substances derived from
animals, insects, plants and rocks. Scientists consider “wax” to be a generic term for
classifying materials that are liquid at highertemperature, water repellent, smooth texture,
low odor and low toxicity. All waxesare primarily hydrocarbons, whether the wax is of
animal, vegetable, or petroleumorigin. The chemical composition of all waxes used for
candle-making is similar, and all candle waxes burn in the same manner.
Method
After sterilizing the plastic containers and stainless bowl with hot water, the ingredients
were ready. The water came from the faucet, and the oil and coconut meat were purchased
at the market. The remaining items were either purchased from the grocery or borrowed
from the proponent's friends.
B) Treatment/General Procedure
Using a machete, the coconut was split in half, and the meat was then shredded with a Coco
shredder. Wearing gloves, we combined the coconut pulp with ¼ cup water to facilitate the
extraction of coconut milk, which was then strained through a strainer. We continued to
press it until a specific volume of coconut milk was obtained. Next, it was placed inside a
steel bowl. Additionally, the tools and supplies were ready. We used the frying pan to melt
the candle, and then we put it into a plastic container. Next, we transferred the 160 mL of
coconut milk and ½ cup of cooking oil from the frying pan to a different plastic container.
And right away, we combined the 160mL of coconut milk, the melted candle, and ½ cup of
cooking oil. After waiting for a few minutes, it was cooled.
