Document

The document provides solutions to two probability problems involving a fair coin and colored balls. For the coin toss, the probability of getting all three outcomes the same (either all heads or all tails) is 1/4. For the second problem, the probability of drawing a red ball from a box containing 2 red, 3 blue, and 4 white balls is 2/9.

1. A fair coin is tossed thrice, what is the probability of getting all 3 same outcomes?

a.3/4
b.1/4
c. 1/2
d. 1/6
*Solution*

When a coin is thrown, there is only two possible outcome, which is either Head (H) or Tail (T).

Probability of getting the same outcomes three times.

We can see this as getting 3 Head Or getting 3 Tails.

*Remember Intersection (n) means "And" and can also be written as **

Probability of getting 3 Heads

Pr(H n H n H) = 1/2 *1/2 *1/2
= 1/8

Probability of getting 3 Tails

Pr(T n T n T) = 1/2 *1/2 *1/2
= 1/8

*Remember Union (U) means "Or" and can also be written as +*

Pr(H n H n H) U Pr(T n T n T)
= 1/8 + 1/8
= 2/8
= 1/4
Answer is (B)

2. There are 2 red balls, 3 blue balls and 4 white balls in a box. One ball is drawn at random, what
is the probability the the ball drawn at random is red...

*Solution*
Probability = Event /Sample Space

2 red balls
3 blue balls
4 white balls
Total balls = 9
Pr(red) = Number of red balls (Event)/Total Number Of Balls (Sample Space)

Pr(red) = 2/9.
