INTRODUCTION

The project was developed based on key insights from surveys conducted in Barangay Lumbangan,
Zone 5. The survey revealed that while residents have some awareness of government services, there
remain significant gaps in accessibility and utilization, particularly in areas concerning waste
management and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the community faces challenges in waste
disposal from observation, with limited access to proper trash bins and a lack of awareness regarding
proper waste segregation.

These findings underscored the need for a project that not only addresses improper waste disposal
but also educates residents on sustainable practices. By implementing structured waste
management solutions, such as strategically placed SWM trash bins, educational seminars on waste
segregation, and the Trash to Cash initiative, residents will gain the knowledge and tools necessary
to manage waste effectively while discovering opportunities to generate income from recyclable
materials.
INTRODUCTION

This project aims to transform the environmental landscape of Barangay Lumbangan, Zone 5, by
promoting responsible waste management practices and encouraging active community
participation. Like many communities, Zone 5 faces challenges related to improper waste disposal,
which not only harms the environment but also poses health risks to residents. This initiative seeks to
address these issues while empowering the community with the knowledge and tools necessary for
sustainable living.

One of the key features of this project is the installation of Solid Waste Management (SWM) trash
cans, uniquely designed with hoops at the opening. This creative approach encourages both adults
and children to dispose of their waste properly by turning it into a fun, basketball-style activity. For
those who prefer not to throw their trash in this way, the bins are still easily accessible for regular
disposal. Additionally, the project includes educational seminars on waste management, a house-to-
house clean-up drive and a “Kids Fun Day” featuring a painting session of the said trash bin.
INTRODUCTION

Through these efforts, residents will not only learn the importance of waste segregation but
also discover how recyclable waste can become a source of income which is featured in the
seminar part of the project, fostering both environmental sustainability and economic
empowerment. Ultimately, this project aims to instill a long-term commitment to environmental
responsibility while improving the quality of life for Barangay Lumbangan, Zone 5. By setting an
example of sustainable community development, it hopes to inspire other communities to
adopt similar practices.
PROJECT GOALS
AND OBJECTIVES
Enhance waste disposal practices through the provision of SWM trash cans in key areas of
Zone 5.
Educate residents on proper waste segregation and the long-term benefits of responsible
waste management.
Promote community involvement through a house-to-house clean-up drive, encouraging
residents to actively participate in keeping their surroundings clean.
Introduce recycling as an economic opportunity through the "Trash to Cash" initiative,
empowering the community to earn from recyclable waste.
Increase awareness and compliance with proper wastes management practices.
A cleaner and more sustainable community through active participation in waste management
initiatives.
Enhance economic benefits for residents through recycling opportunities.
A long-term commitment to environmental responsibility.
TARGET AUDIENCE

The project will potentially benefit the following stakeholders:

Residents – The primary beneficiaries are the households within the community. They will gain cleaner
surroundings, improved waste management knowledge, and potential income through the "Trash to Cash"
initiative.
Local Government Units (LGUs) and Barangay Officials – By supporting this project, barangay leaders and
LGUs can strengthen environmental policies, enhance waste disposal systems, and foster a culture of
sustainability within their jurisdiction.
Community-Based Organizations – Environmental groups, youth organizations, and volunteers will have
the opportunity to engage in community service, helping raise awareness and facilitate clean-up activities.
Students and Youth – Young residents will develop early habits of responsible waste management,
ensuring that the next generation values and practices sustainability.
Local Junk Shops and Recycling Centers – These businesses will benefit from increased collection and
trade of recyclable materials, strengthening the circular economy and reducing landfill waste.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES

The Solid Waste Management Implementation and Community Clean-Up in Zone 5 includes various
essential activities designed to encourage proper waste disposal and support environmental
sustainability. Initially, SWM waste bins will be positioned in convenient spots to aid in effective
waste separation. Every bin will be assigned a tarpaulin explaining which trash belongs to which bin
to guarantee clarity and convenience for residents. Following this, a seminar on education and
awareness will be held to educate the community on the significance of waste management, its
effects on the environment, and proper waste segregation techniques. This will enhance cleanliness in
the region and also foster a practice of responsible waste management. This includes a “Trash-to-
Cash” recycling seminar, educating residents on transforming recyclable materials into marketable or
reusable items. To support this, residents will engage in a waste separation training, where they will
acquire practical skills for correctly sorting and disposing of household waste. To promote active
participation, a neighborhood clean-up initiative will be held, where residents will be assisted in
collecting their waste and properly disposing of it in the assigned trash bins.
