Maths Grade 12 Unit Part Four Short Note

The document discusses geometric progressions, defining them as sequences where the ratio between consecutive terms is a constant known as the common ratio. It provides examples to illustrate how to find the common ratio, first term, and the general term of a geometric sequence. Additionally, it explains the concept of geometric mean between two numbers within a geometric sequence.

Maths G12 Unit One Part

four Note
II. Geometric Progression
 A geometric sequence is one type of sequence in which the ratio between consecutive term is non –
zero constant.
 This non – zero constant s known as common ratio ( r ).
 Example : For the following geometric sequence 2 , 4 , 8 , 16 ….. Find the common ratio , first term (
G1 ) and the 5th ( G5) term.
Solution
Common ratio ( r ) = 4 / 2 = 8 / 4 = 16 / 8 ….. = 2
First term ( G1 ) = 2
The 5th term ( G5 ) = G4 * r = 16 * 2 = 32
General Term ( Formula ) of geometric
Sequenece

 If { Gn } is geometric sequence with the first term G 1 and common

ratio , then the nth term ( general term ) of the sequence is given by G n
= G1rn-1.
 Example Find the general term of a geometric sequence when the
first term 3 and the common ratio is 4.
Solution
Gn = G1rn-1
= 3×4n-1
Geometric Mean between Two
Numbers
 When x , y and z are terms in geometric sequence , then y is called the
geometric mean between x and y ( x = 0 , y = 0 and z = 0).
 In a geometric sequence , the ratio between consecutive term is equal : this
means y / x = z / y.
 Example : If 3 , Z , 7 ….. Is a geometric sequence , find z ?
Solution
Z/3=7/Z
Z2 = 21
Z = +✓21
