Geometric Sequences &

Series
Tuguegarao City Science High School
Keynotes:
A sequence is called Geometric if there is a common
ratio for the succeeding terms. This common ratio r is
obtained by dividing a term by its preceding term.

Examples:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, …  common ratio is 2
96, 48, 24, 12, 6, 3, …  common ratio is ½ or 0.5
2, 6, 18, 54, 162, …  common ratio is 3
2, -10, 50, -250, 1250, …  common ratio is -5
162, 54, 18, 6, 2, …  common ratio is 1/3
Keynotes:
When two terms of a Geometric
sequence Gn and Gm are given, we can
find the common
ratio r by using the formula

r=
Keynotes:
Terms of an Geometric sequence:
3 6 12 24 48 96 192
1st term 2nd term 3rd term 4th term 5th term 6th term 7th term

Any nth term will be represented as Gn.

The 1st term, or G1, is 3.
The 4th term, or G4, is 24.
The 7th term, or G7, is 192.
Keynotes:
The formula for the nth term of a
Geometric sequence is given as:
Gn = G1 rn-1
But some mathematicians prefer to use
Gn = G0 rn
Keynotes:
We can get the sum of the first n terms
of a Geometric sequence using the
formula
Sn =
And for infinite Geometric series, the
formula is
S∞ =
