GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

✓ Sequence that are form by

multiplication. Each term in a
geometric sequence is found by
multiplying the previous term by the
same number.
✓ Thus, the constant
multiplier in a geometric
sequence is called common

a) 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, …
Take note: b) 6, −12, 24, −48, …
✓r is positive whole number – if
increasing and all terms are also
positive
✓r is negative whole number – if
increasing and terms are alternate
positive and negative
c) 27, 9, 3, 1, …
d) −48, 12, −4, 1, …
Take note:
✓r is positive fraction – if decreasing
and all terms are also positive
✓r is negative fraction – if decreasing
and terms are alternate positive and
negative
Take note:
✓If you multiply/divide a certain
number to get the next term, then
it is geometric
✓If you add/subtract to get the
next term, then it is arithmetic

Geometric Means
Are the terms between any two given
terms of a geometric sequence.

Geometric Series

Is the sum of the terms of a geometric

sequence.
If the number of the terms in the
geometric sequence is finite, the sum of
terms is called a finite geometric series. If
not, the series is infinite.

(𝒓 −𝟏)
𝑺𝒏 = or 𝑺𝒏 =
(𝟏−𝒓) (𝒓−𝟏)
Where:
𝒂𝟏 = first term
𝒏 = number of terms
𝒓 = common ratio
Formula of Infinite Geometric

𝒂𝟏
𝑺∞ = , 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 |𝒓| < 𝟏
(𝟏−𝒓)
Where:
𝒂𝟏 = first term
𝒓 = common ratio

geometric sequence -5, 10, -20, 40,…
2. Find the sum of the first six terms of the
geometric sequence 3, 9, 27,…
3. Find the sum of a geometric sequence for
which the first term is 125, the last term is
1/5, and the common ratio is 1/5.
