change, the contact wire need to be kept proper tension to safely supply
the traction power to a Train via the pantograph.

KRSB was developed by D2 Engineering, as a development project of
KOREA Railway Government in 2005.
Development PURPOSE :
- Full Maintenance-free system with over 30 years of the expected service life
- Easier installation and operation,
- Minimized human/material resources for maintenance
- Safety of the railway

Registered as KOREA RAILROAD STANDARD


(KRS PW 0012-06, 0012-08(R)) in 2006
Acquired the Quality Certificate from Quality Certification Center of
KORAIL Research Institute since 2010

>> Characteristics of KRSB

KRSB has the following characteristics comparing to wheel type balancer.

1) Superior Quality
All of coil spring manufactured get press test to check function of spring so that
it is not necessary to equip the protective device such as stopper. As the result, it meets
to durability and safety for the long time.

2) Maintenance Free
Maintenance free is possible because springs are not only equipped in the drum but also
auxiliary parts are not necessary. Moreover, since the counter balance weights
are not used, there is no need for snow clearing works. And also daily inspections are
not necessary for checking the operating condition.
It is easy to install in the stations or tunnels because of good working condition due to
simple construction as well as no need for wide space.

3) High Reliability
Simple construction results in less trouble, and tensioning activation is protected
from the external impact.

4) Automatic Adjustability
There is no problem in operation even in case of excessive tension by external force
due to wind pressure and ice load and it is automatically returned to the original state
after external force disappears.

5) Effective Operation
There is no temporal discrepancy in operation since it has low mechanical resistance
and effective reaction to small variation by temperature change.

6) Function of Tension Management and Check of Catenary Status


It is possible to manage the catenary status (within ±10% of tension variation), since
the scale is always located downward horizontally and also has the function of the
tension meter. In case that large differences are found between the calculated stroke
and the scale, some problems on the catenary system may exist.

>> Check Point of Installation
[Design and Operation]
① Confirm specification of catenary and contact wire
: thickness, material(linear expansion coefficient, coefficient of elasticity)
② Confirm tension strength of catenary and contact wire : individual tension, combined tension
③ Confirm string length and tension length : In many cases both tension length may not be equal for
both side string
④ Confirm tension pole type : Fittings for KRSB installation depends on pole type
⑤ Select the type of KRSB
: The type of KRSB shall be selected from the table "KRSB items" to meet conditions above ①~③
- It is desirable to use same KRSB without mid-point in case of both side tension
- It is desirable to select the KRSB based on longer tension length when mid-point is taken

PRECAUTIONS ON KRSB INSTALLATION


1. Adjust the scale during installation
2. Check the status of KRSB installation
3. Check the line resistance
4. Do not consider temperature difference between open track and tunnel section

>> The Use of Stroke Allowance

Stroke range applied in general case : 60[℃]

Stroke range applied in special case : 70[℃]

The stroke application of coil spring type can be classified into general case of 60℃ and
special case of 70℃. The red edges at both side of the scale plate indicate allowance of
stroke applied for special case of temperature range of more than 60℃. The tensioning
device of each coil spring type has 10-20% of stroke allowance (ex. In the above figure
case, stroke scale is 500[mm]+140[mm]=640[mm]) Therefore, coil spring type tension
device is economic system.

>> Operation of KRSB
□ New Installation
Since the KRSB operation as soon as installed on the catenary, there will not
occur any tension variation by absorbing the variation of the wire length due to
temperature change. However, in case of new installation, due to elongation of
wire after stringing or settlement of the fittings, tension of the catenary is likely
reduced regardless of the ambient temperature change. it is necessary to adjust
the tension.
Especially, it is noted that the KRSB should be installed after pre-stretching of
the combined contact wire after stringing to avoid readjustment of tension.
It is preferable to readjust the catenary more than one week later after the initial

stringing, if necessary.

□ Utilization of Scale (Catenary Defect Detection Device)


It is possible to inspect the flexibility of the wire by checking the scale, which shows
the expansion and contraction of the contact wires accurately without delay. In case
of considerably different value between the scale and the calculation, it shows that
the contact wires can not move easily due to resistance on somewhere in the combined
contact wire. Therefore, it is possible to utilize the scale as "defect detection device"
by comparing the scale value with the calculation.

□ Anti-corrosion
Normally, the hot-dipped zinc galvanizing is adapted for corrosion protection of KRSB.
The standard galvanizing is HDZ 70, while as for steel materials of railways HDZ 55 is
applied.
In normal circumstance, duration of zinc galvanizing is 30 years, but when rust is
