ECE 330 homework assignment #1, due in Quiz #1

Text problem 2.1 (Partial answer: 0.707 leading)

A voltage v(t) = 100cos(377t+10) is applied to a two-terminal network and the current into the
network is measured as i(t) = cos(377t+55). Compute the average power into the network and
power factor.

Text problem 2.2 (Partial answers: -250, -500, 500, 0, 150, 1900, -150)
Find the average power into the terminals of the two-terminal network, and PF (state whether it is
leading or lagging) for the following cases.
a) v(t) = 100cos(377t+15), i(t) = -10sin(377t+45)
b) v(t) = 100cos(377t-75), i(t) = -10sin(377t+15)
c) v(t) = 2 100sin(377t-30), i(t) = 2 10cos(377t-60)
d) v(t) = 100sin(377t+30), i(t) = 10cos(377t+120)
e) V  10  j10 , I  5  j10
f) V  100  j 90 , I  10  j10
g) V  10  j10 , I  5  j10

Text problem 2.8

Two loads are connected in parallel and the currents are I1  50  j 40 and I 2  50  j 60 . The
voltage across the combination is 2 10045 . Find the total current, the complex power, and the
overall PF.

Text problem 2.9

A 230 V source supplies two loads in parallel. Load 1 draws 5 kVA at a lagging PF of 0.8 and load
2 draws 3 kW at a lagging PF of 0.9. Take source voltage as the reference phasor 2300 V. Find
the source current and the total complex power supplied by the source.

Text problem 2.10 (Partial answer: 100 Amps)

Three loads are connected in parallel as follows: Load 1 absorbs an average power of 8 kW at a
lagging PF of 0.8. Load 2 absorbs 20 kVA at a leading PF of 0.6. Load 3 is an impedance of
2.5 + j5.0 . The voltage across the parallel combination is 2500 V. The load is supplied
through a feeder having an impedance of 0.1 + j1.0 . Find the source voltage vs(t) and is(t)
assuming the frequency is 60 Hz.

Text problem 2.11

Three loads in parallel are as follows: Load 1, 250 kVA at 0.5 PF lag, load 2, 180 kW at 0.8 lead,
load 3, 283 + j100 kVA. Find the total complex power and the overall power factor of the
combination. What is the kVAR of the capacitor needed to make the overall PF 0.8 lead? The
capacitor is connected across the parallel combination.

Text problem 2.12

Two loads are connected in parallel across a source whose voltage is 100060 V. Load 1 is
100 kVA at 0.866 PF lagging and load 2 is 40 kW at 0.5 lagging. Find the total complex power, the
total current I supplied by the source, and the currents in each of the loads.

Special problem #1

A single-phase source is supplying passive loads through two wires (typically called a feeder). The
impedance of each wire is 0.05 + j0.05 . The load is connected between the two wires at the far
end. The load current (which is also the feeder current) is 75 Amps (RMS).

a) What is the source voltage that you need in order to have 120 Volts (RMS) across the load
when the power factor of the load is unity? (Answer: 128 V)
b) Repeat for the case where the load power factor is 0.707 lagging (Answer: 131 V).
c) Repeat for the case where the load power factor is 0 leading (Answer: 113 V).

Special problem #2

Three single-phase loads are connected in parallel across a 60 Hz source of 240 Volts.

Load #1: 6 kVA at 0.8 power factor lag

Load #2: 4 kW at 0.9 power factor lag
Load #3: 13 Amps at unity power factor

a) Find the total complex power consumed by these three loads.

b) Find the source current magnitude (Answer: 54.76 Amps)
c) Find the value of capacitive VARs that should be added in parallel to these three loads to
make the overall power factor 0.95 lag. (Answer: 1,619 VARs)
