Question 1: Consider randomly selected students at a certain University, and let ‘A’ denote the
event that the selected individual has a Visa Credit Card and ‘B’ be the analogous event for a
n
Master Card. Suppose that P(A) = 0.5; P(B) = 0.4; P(A B) = 0.25
a. Compute the probability that the selected individual has at least one credit card.
Hint: P (AUB) =?
b. What is the probability that the selected individual has neither type of the card?
c. Describe in terms of A and B, the event that the selected student has a Visa Card but
not a Master Card and then calculate the probability of this event.
Question 2: A box in certain supply room contains four 40W lightbulbs, five 60W lightbulbs and
six 75W lightbulbs. Suppose that three bulbs are randomly selected: (Hint: Use Counting
Techniques to solve the probabilities)
a. What is the probability that exactly two bulbs are of 75W?
b. What is the probability that all the three of selected bulbs are of the same rating?
c. What is the probability that one bulb of each type is selected?
Question 3: The probability that a regularly scheduled flight departs on time is P(D) =0.83; the
probability that it arrives on time is P(A) = 0.82; and the probability that it departs and arrives on
n
time is P(D A) = 0.78. Find the probability that a plane:
a. Arrives on time given that it departed on time, and
b. Departed on time given that it has arrived on time.
Question 4: In a certain assembly plant, three machines, B1, B2, and B3 make 30%, 45%, and
25%, respectively, of products. It is known from past experience that 2%, 3%, and 2% of the
products made by each machine, respectively are defective. Now suppose that the finished product
was randomly selected:
a. What is the probability that it was defective?
b. What is the probability that the randomly chosen defective product was made by machine B3.

Extra Credit Question: A coin is biased so that a head is twice as likely to occur as a tail. If the
coin is tossed 3 times, what is the probability of getting 2 tails and 1 head?
