Title: “I am a homosexual, mum”

“I am a homosexual” - main clause

“Mum” - addressing his mom directly - shows bravery since he’s addressing her directly

Para 1:
“Hey mum”: reflects how people process grief (by talking to the person, and remebering
their last moments), coping mechanisms; this draws the listener in as it introduces the text
in a very personal manner.

“Kenyatta. Intensive Care. Critical Care.there” short syntax, shows how his thoughts
might not be gathered due to grief. Reflects raw emotions , shows vulnerability.

“Because this time I will not be away in South Africa, fucking things up in that
chaotic way of mine.”: shows how people often greif after the death of a loved one, how
they think of what they could’ve spent more time with them. TONE: regretful

“fucking things up in that chaotic way of mine.”Cursing reflects anger, shows how he
is blaming himself (again relating to how people experience grief)
“I am whispering in her ear. She is awake, listening, soft calm loving, with my head
right inside in her breathspace.” - he was imagining a fake reality, shows the
tendencies humans often have, how they think of what they could’ve done instead of
what they should do right now. - shows how we forget to live in the moment and dwell
over the past/future

“Mum. I will say. Muum?” Extra letters added to words, shows emotions. TONE:
desperate

“and she exhales. My heart gasps sharp and now my mind screams, sharp, so
so hurt so so angry.”: moment of realization “snapping back to reality”, emotions felt by
him are very contrasting and sudden, correlating to how he perceives his mother’s death.

“I am a homosexual, mum”: only says it after his mom exhales, “is she not letting me
in” “has it been registered”. This might relate to how people only tell their loved ones
things about themselves (that no one knew) after they passed away due to the fear of
being judged. - and never actually knowing whether their loved ones heard them or not.

Right version of events, second para

Showing the reality of what actually happened,

“I have never touched a man sexually. I have slept with three

women in my life. One woman, successfully. Only once with her. It was amazing. But
the next day, I was not able to”: very honest, he is portraying his complete story even
though he might not be proud of some of his actions.

Everything is written in future tense, “I am five years old” - it’s as if he’s narrating his
story as a five year old - maybe to appear less vulnerable since people don’t judge
children as much as adults.

“He smells of diesel, and the world of all other people’s movements has disappeared.” -
he memorized that specific moment with his father (as if it were in slow motion)
Talk about his relationship with men, how he often feels awkward, but not in a sexual
manner.

Conclusion: he is five again, tells his story as if he is five currently for lesser judgement.

Ending - again short syntax, loops with the starting, exsablished a powerful tone, its very
short and direct, to show the audience that there won’t be any change and he has already
confirmed his identity.
