ASP 140: AFRICA IN THE UNIPOLAR WORLD
2024/2025 ACADEMIC YEAR
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The intensification of the East-West conflict (the Cold War) following the and of the Second
World War was one of the most crucial dynamics in African politics and foreign policy.
Specifically, the behavior of one or both superpowers (the United States and Russia) and their
relations with African countries have been vital issues in African politics and foreign policy
formulation. The course gives a comprehensive insight into how the Cold War dynamics have
shaped Africa's political and economic development. It examines the response of Africa to the bi-
polarization of the world and encourages students to develop an understanding of how the
polarization influenced various forms of nationalist and liberation movements on the continent. It
leads students to develop an appreciation of why Africans in Central and Southern African
regions experienced much more tortuous and difficult road in their journey to independence than
other regions in sub-Saharan Africa. It examines the collective approach taken by 'Third World'
countries (eg. NAM) in response to the effects of the cold war. It looks at the specific role played
by Ghana in supporting the fight against colonialism and the apartheid system. Finally, the
