Technological Determinism

We use social media platforms every second that we are awake. These
platforms have become so important in our lives that we don’t even notice the
amount of time and energy spent on these platforms. Now it almost comes
natural for us to go ahead and open these applications first thing in the
morning. All the trends and fashion for our generation now has its origin from
social. The narrative has become old that despite the name social media, we
move far from the people in our immediate society. Now, the society is over
the internet. This community has become a society in itself. We build
characters and new personalities based on what’s trending online. New
memes, funny videos and dialogues are created through viral videos on social
media. We even use these dialogues in our real life and our friends
immediately know what meme we are referencing to.
Some people might say it inconsequential whatever happens over the internet
and that social media does not have the power to influence the society’s
values. But what happens when this community becomes a different society in
a completely different dimension? Are we still to deny the fact that social
media indeed could potentially bring change in values of the people. We could
have denied it if social media wasn’t that popular or we didn’t have Instagram
reels but we actually do.
People are addicted already to these applications, people use these platforms
every day, people have built businesses over these platforms and people
regularly post on these applications. There is greater likelihood that if I am free,
I am simply going to go on ahead and open one of these applications for the
instant gratification it provides. These platforms have algorithms that are built
and designed to make me stick to this platform despite the workload I might
have, I will just procrastinate and spend more time on these platforms. If there
is greater likelihood that I am simply going to use this application, how we can
deny that it can’t have any impact on our society? How can we say there
doesn’t exist any detrimental impact on an individual? We follow the trend and
topics viral on social media. We care deeply about the photos that we post on
social media and seek validation from the people over the social media. We
need attention from a large number of people who are unknown to us. There is
greater likelihood that I might agree with whatever is shown to me in a 30
second reel. To put it simply we require the same attention and validation that
we require from our friends and family from the unknown and large amount of
people over the internet.
One of the major impacts that these platforms have, manifests in the form of
our lack of attention span. We now want everything to be shown to us in just
thirty seconds. We cannot wait for more than one minute to actually gain any
kind of information everything should be handed to us in a single minute. It
impacts our attention, focus and the ability of our brain to concentrate on
tasks. Our brain doesn’t even have the ability to go on ahead and actually read
a good book on our topic. The ability to read or more importantly our habit to
read has diminished. It’s not that we can’t do it, we don’t want to do it. When
you see false information and propaganda again and again, your brain starts
actually believing in that false piece of information. So, when we constantly
watch shorts or reels or go through hundreds of these posts over these
platforms there is a greater likelihood that we probably get influenced by this
overwhelming influence and people.
How do society’s values develop? It develops through the influence on an
individual. These individuals exist in the composition of a society. In a sort of
chain reaction if you may, society’s values and interactions develop. We
interact with each other and probably that is where the development of a
society takes place. We talk to each other, discuss with each other or even
protest for our rights and that is where the evolution of our values takes place.
In the same way, we interact with each other over social media and discuss
about a variety of topics. We even protest through hashtags over twitter. We
believe it is evident that society’s development in this matrix does take place
and it leads to determination of what’s right or wrong. Social media is a society
in itself where something believed to be taboo in social standing could be
considered right or something right could be considered a taboo. Social media
has its own characteristics unique to our society. So when something has so
much influence, power and support to determine things, we believe that it is
self-explanatory that we arrive at a conclusion where social media could impact
society’s values, interactions and beliefs.
