Attribute Group Dependency Rule Method

The document provides instructions on using the Attribute Group Dependency Rule Method in Deswik.IS to create dependencies between tasks based on their assigned attributes and values. It details the steps for setting up dependency rules, including grouping tasks, defining sorting and linking logic, and applying spatial constraints. Additionally, it mentions the option to select from default rule templates to streamline the process.

Attribute Group Dependency Rule Method
Learn how to use the attribute group dependency rule method to create your dependencies between tasks based on their assigned
attributes and values.

Before you run this command, in the Deswik.IS window, click Dependency Creation to display the Dependency Creation dialog, add a new rule
 set, and then add a new row to the grid.

You use the attribute group method to link tasks according to their assigned attributes and values. You can apply grouping to limit the
tasks selected and you can change the order to progress the dependency links within that group.

Instructions:

1. Select Attribute Group in the Method field.

Most fields in the Dependency Rules dialog are described in detail in the Automatic Dependencies Tab topic.

2. The Attribute Rule dialog appears.

3. Use the following table to assist you with the options in this dialog.

Field Description

Group tasks by Add a row to the grid, and then select the fields that you want to group your tasks by.

Field: Select the fields that you want to group your tasks by.
Field Description

The list contains the names of the custom or production fields defined in the Deswik.Sched file. If no
 custom fields are defined, this list will be empty.

Numeric: Select this checkbox to treat the grouping attribute values as numeric. By default, the
attribute values are treated as text.

Task sorting and Define the logic that will be used to create dependencies within the groups that you defined earlier.
linking logic
Field: Enter the linking attribute.

Link From Type: Enter how you want to link your dependencies:

Ascending: Select this option to link in ascending order.

Descending: Select this option to link in descending order.

Min -> Max: Select this option to link from the minimum value to the maximum value.

Max -> Min: Select this option to link from the maximum value to the minimum value.

Max -> Max: Select this option to link from the maximum value to the maximum value.

Min -> Min: Select this option to link from the minimum value to the minimum value.

Max -> All: Select this option to link from the maximum value to all tasks that match the
settings in the To field of the Dependency Rules dialog.

Min -> All: Select this option to link from the minimum value to all tasks that match the
settings in the To field of the Dependency Rules dialog.

Step: Enter the number to steps to create. For example, enter '1' to create a dependency
between the next highest or next lowest, or enter '2' to create a dependency between the next
two highest or lowest tasks.

If you are using Min or Max links, this is the number from the minimum or maximum.
Field Description

Step To: If you are using Min or Max links, this is the number from the minimum or maximum.

Sequential: Select this checkbox to link tasks in a sequential order. For example, if your blocks
were numbered '1', '2', '4', and '5', a link will not be created between blocks '2' and '4' if you select
this checkbox. If you clear this checkbox, then a link will be created between all blocks.

Numeric Sort: Select this checkbox to sort tasks numerically. If this checkbox is not selected a
group containing values between '1' and '11' would be sorted in the order '1', '10', '11', '2', '3', '4',
'5', '6', '7', '8', '9'.

Use spatial Select this checkbox to constrain the length of dependencies created using these rules.
constraints
Dependency length: Specify the minimum and maximum lengths for the dependencies.

Select from defaults Click to select from a range of rule templates. The Select Template Rule to Add dialog appears.

Rule Template: This field displays the default rule templates you can choose from.

Description: This field describes the rule settings.

Select a rule template, and then click OK .

Field Description

You are returned to the Attribute Rule dialog. Deswik.IS will populate the form with the settings from the
rule template that you selected.

You can adjust the default rule template settings to suit your needs.

4. Click OK .

5. You are returned to the Dependency Creation dialog.
