EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
D. Short-Answer Questions
1. What is meant by emerging technologies? (3) pg3

The term emerging technology is used to describe a new technology, but it may also refer to the
continuing development of an existing technology. In a world driven by digital solutions, new
technologies continue to influence the way we live, work and interact.

2. What are transistors? (3) pg2

Ans: A transistor is a semiconductor-based device that amplifies, controls and generates electrical
signals. Transistors replaced the large vacuum tubes in second-generation computers. The transistor was
created in 1947at Bell Labs, but it wasn’t used commonly in computers until the late 1950s.

3. Define Artificial Intelligence. (3) pg5

Ans: Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are
programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The ideal characteristic of artificial
intelligence is its ability to achieve a specific goal.

4. Write the main difference between Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). (5) pg6,7

Ans: Virtual Reality (VR) is a simulated three-dimensional environment that allows users to explore and
interact with a virtual environment in a way that approximates reality.
Augmented Reality (AR) merges the physical and virtual worlds by images or animations into a real-
world environment.

5. What are self-driving cars? What technology do they use? (3) pg5,6

Ans: A vehicle that can sense its surroundings and function without human help is a self-driving car.
These cars have artificial intelligence-based systems that use past data to learn and then perform the
same task without human interaction.

E. Long-Answer Questions
1. Describe the impact of emerging technologies. (5)

Ans: Emerging technologies and science tools are changing the world in different fields.

I. Robots and machines help people do work faster.

II. Robotics is a merger of engineering and computer science.
III. New inventions can help doctors find and treat sickness better.

IV. Online tools and smart computers make studying easier and more fun for kids.
V. Technology is helping us save energy, grow more food, and clean the planet.
2. What is robotics? Define its types. (5) pg4

Ans: Robotics is a merger of engineering and computer science. It involves the design, construction,
operation, and use of robots. The types of robots include pre-programmed, humanoid, autonomous,
teleoperated and augmenting robots.

3. Explain how a 3D hologram displays a 3D image. (3) pg7

Ans: A 3D hologram is a three-dimensional image produced by photographic projection it does not

require any special glasses to view. It’s applications such as product presentation, using multiple light
rays.

4. Give examples of latest technologies in computers and describe how they impact human lives? (5)

Ans: Latest technologies in computers are:

Robotics, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Self-Driving Cars and 3D Printing

I. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

• New inventions can help doctors find and treat sickness better.
• Technology is helping us save energy, grow more food, and clean the planet.
II. Robotics.
• Robots and machines help people to do work faster.
• Robots enhancing productivity in various fields like manufacturing, healthcare and
agriculture etc.

2. Name some of the Output Devices. (3) Pg14

Ans: Display screen, printer, speaker, headphones, earphones and earbuds

3. Write the difference between serial & parallel port. (5) Pg16

Serial port: By connecting peripherals to a computer through a serial port, data used to be sent one bit
at a time via a single communication line.

Parallel port: It is a type of interface that allows for the transfer of data between a computer and a
peripheral device. This means that data can be sent in either direction through many wires
simultaneously.

4. Write the main difference between HDMI and mini-HDMI. (5) Pg17

HDMI: HDMI is a digital interface that is used to link High-Definition devices such as gaming consoles.

Mini HDMI: It is a smaller version of the standard HDMI connector. It is used in smaller devices like cameras.

5. Explain the term Gigabit Ethernet. (3) Pg18

Ans: Gigabit Ethernet is a type of Ethernet technology that supports data transfer rates of up to 1 gigabit
per second. Gigabit Ethernet is the newest form of Ethernet technology which can carry data at a rate of
more than 10 Gigabits per second.

E. Long-Answer Questions:
1. Write in detail about the Internal Hardware of a computer system. (3) Pg10

Ans: Internal hardware are those parts that are built into the system. Those parts of a computer that are
not removable are considered as internal hardware. For example, Motherboard, CPU, RAM and ROM.

2. Write in detail about the External Hardware of a computer system. (3) Pg10

Ans: External hardware are the parts attached to a system to serve different purposes. Those parts that
are attached to the computer and removable are called external parts. For example, mouse, keyboard
and printer.

3. Explain the working of I/O ports in computers and name some of them. (3) Pg19

Ans: I/O Ports are used as an attachment point for peripheral cables, facilitating the transfer of
information to and from the device. For example, serial port, USB port, parallel port.

4. Explain the working of PCle Slots. (5) Pg18

Ans: PCle slots can be found in x1, x4, x8, and x16 physical formats. The value after the x indicates the
number of data transfer lanes available to the PCle card. For instance, one lane of a PCI Express x1 slot
can transfer data at the rate of one bit per cycle. Two bits per cycle can be transferred across a PCI
Express x2 slot's two lanes.

5. Write down the working of PCle Lane. (3) Pg19

Ans: PCle lanes are the physical link between the PCIe-supported device and the processor. PCle lanes
consist of two pairs of copper wires, typically known as traces. PCle lane is like a highway where the
vehicles travel in both directions at the same time.
