NETWORK & ITS COMPONENTS

WHAT IS CCNA?

Cisco Certified Network Associate is a beginner level certification course offered by Cisco in order to provide the enrolled
candidates with the knowledge, understanding, functioning and maintaining of the Security, Automation, and
Networking.
• The exam code for CCNA is code CCNA 200-301.
• It has 50 - 60questions to be answered in 120 minutes where only the score of 82.5% or 825 marks out of 1000 is
considered pass.

TOPICS
A computer network comprises two or more computers that are connected
NETWORK either by cables (wired) or WiFi (wireless)—with the purpose of
transmitting, exchanging, or sharing data and resources.

In the diagram, we can see the

packets generated from any PC will
move to all nodes available in the
network. Hence, this whole network
Router
segment is 1 broadcast domain.
Internet
An example of a network is the Internet, which connects millions of people
NETWORK all over the world.

Advantages of a network
There are more advantages to a network than disadvantages. In fact, many companies today wouldn't exist without
accessing some form of network. Below are the advantages of a network.
• Share data and information
• Communication,
• Share hardware,
• Transferring money.
There are five main types of Computer Networks:
TYPES OF
NETWORK

1. PAN (Personal Area Network)

2. LAN (Local Area Network)
3. WLAN (Wireless Local Area
4. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
5. WAN (Wide Area Network)
TYPES OF Personal Area Network
NETWORK

Personal Area Network

(PAN) is the computer network
that connects computers/devices
within the range of an individual
person. As PAN provides a
network range within a person’s
range typically within a range of
10 meters(33 feet) it is called a
Personal Area Network.
TYPES OF Local Area Network
NETWORK

LAN or Local Area Network

connects network devices in
such a way that personal
computers and workstations can
share data, tools, and programs.
The group of computers and
devices are connected together
by a switch, or stack of switches,
using a private addressing scheme
as defined by the TCP/IP
protocol.
TYPES OF Local Area Network
NETWORK

Advantages
• Provides fast data transfer rates and high-speed communication.
• Easy to set up and manage.
• Can be used to share peripheral devices such as printers and scanners.
• Provides increased security and fault tolerance compared to WANs.

Disadvantages
• Limited geographical coverage.
• Limited scalability and may require significant infrastructure upgrades to accommodate
growth.
• May experience congestion and network performance issues with increased usage.
TYPES OF Wireless Local Area Network
NETWORK

Wireless Local Area Network

(WLAN) is a network in which
devices connected to the network
are distributed wirelessly. It is often
used interchangeably with WI-FI
however Wi-Fi is referred to as a
particular network whereas WLAN
is the whole distribution system
itself. However, it is quite similar to
LAN distribution.
TYPES OF Wireless Local Area Network
NETWORK

Advantages
•Wireless connection
•Extendable range
•Signal not blocked by any physical barrier
•Good performance in small area coverage
•Reliable sort of communication
Disadvantages

• May experience congestion and network performance issues with increased usage.
TYPES OF Metropolitan Area Network
NETWORK

MAN or Metropolitan area

Network covers a larger area than
that covered by a LAN and a
smaller area as compared to WAN.
It connects two or more computers
that are apart but reside in the
same or different cities. It covers a
large geographical area and may
serve as an ISP (Internet Service
Provider)
TYPES OF Metropolitan Area Network
NETWORK

Advantages
•Provides high-speed connectivity over a larger geographical area than LAN.
•Can be used as an ISP for multiple customers.
•Offers higher data transfer rates than WAN in some cases.

Disadvantages
• Can be expensive to set up and maintain.
•May experience congestion and network performance issues with increased usage.
•May have limited fault tolerance and security compared to LANs.
TYPES OF Wide Area Network
NETWORK

WAN or Wide Area Network is

a computer network that extends
over a large geographical area,
although it might be confined within
the bounds of a state or country. A
WAN could be a connection of
LAN connecting to other LANs via
telephone lines and radio waves and
may be limited to an enterprise (a
corporation or an organization) or
accessible to the public.
