Mathematics - Class IX
Chapter – 4
Linear Equations In Two Variables
Name of the student: Date:
Class & Section:

1. The general form of a linear equation in two variables is :

(a) ax + by + c = 0, where a, b, c are real numbers and a, b ≠ 0.
(b) ax + b = 0, where a, b are real numbers and a ≠ b.
(c) ax² + bx + c = 0, where a, b, c are real numbers and a, b ≠ 0.
(d) None of these
2. A linear equation in two variables has
(a) a unique solution (b) no solution
(c) two solutions (d) infinitely many solutions
3. Express x + y = 4 in the form ax + by + c = 0.
(a) x + y – 4 = 0 (b) 3x – 8y – 1 = 0
(c) 5x + 4y – 71 = 0 (d) x + 7y – 10 = 0
4. The graph of the linear equation 2x – y = 4 cuts x- axis at_______.
(a) (2,0) (b) (-2,0) (c) (0,-4) (d) (0,4)
5. x = 2, y = -1 is a solution of the linear equation
(a) x + 2y = 0 (b) x + 2y = 4
(c) 2x + y = 0 (d) 2x + y = 5
6. Any point on the x-axis is of the form
(a) (x,y) (b) (0,y) (c)(x,0) (d) (x,x)
7. If (a, 4) lies on the graph of 3x + y = 10, then the value of a is
(b) 3 (b)1 (c) 2 (d) 4
8. If we multiply or divide both sides of a linear equation with non-zero number, then the solution of
the linear equation
(c) changes (b) changes in case of division only
(d) remains same (d) changes in case of multiplication only

9. ASSERTION AND REASON

(a) Both Assertion and Reason are correct, and reason is the correct explanation for the assertion.
(b) Both Assertion and Reason are false, but reason is not the correct explanation for assertion.
(c)Assertion is correct but reason is false.
(d) Both Assertion and reason are false.

(i) Assertion: (2,1) is a solution of 2x + 3y = 7

Reason: If ordered pair (p, q) lies on the line then it is one of the solutions of line ax + by + c = 0.
(ii) If x = 2k – 1 and y = k is a solution of the equation 3x – 5y – 7 = 0, then the value of k is 10.
Reason: A linear equation in two variables has infinitely many solutions.
10. Find two solutions for the equations 4x + 3y = 12.
11. Write the coordinates of the point where the line 2x – 7y = 14 intersects x-axis.
12. Find the coordinates of the points where the graph of the equation 7x – 3y = 4 cuts x-axis
and y- axis.
13. Determine the point on the graph of the equation 2x + 5y = 20 whose x-coordinate is 5/2
times it's ordinate.
14. If (p, 2p + 1) is the solution of the linear equation 4x + 3y = 23. Find the value of p.3
15. Find the value of a for which the equation 2x + ay = 5 has (1,-1) as a solution. Find two
more solutions for the equation obtained.
16. Find the value of b, if x = 9, y = 10 is a solution of the equation 3x + 5y = 11b.
17. Case Study:
(a) Ram and Sham went to a sweet shop together and they ate several sweets. Together they ate 40
sweets. Taking sweets eaten by Ram as x and Sham as y, answer the following questions:
i. Write an equation for the above situation.
ii. If Ram ate 25 sweets, how many sweets did Sham eat?
iii. If Ram ate thrice as many sweets as Sham, how many sweets did Sham eat?
iv. If Ram ate thrice as many sweets as Sham, how many sweets did Ram eat?

(b) Rajan planned to celebrate his daughter's birthday in a small orphanage centre. He bought
apples to give to children and adults working there. Rajan donated 3 apples to each children and 4
apples to each adult working there along with a birthday cake. He distributed 100 total apples.

i. How to represent the above situation in linear equations in two variables by taking the number
of children as 'x' and the number of adults as 'y'?
ii. If the number of children is 20, then find the number of adults
iii. Find the value of b, if x = 9, y = 10 is a solution of the equation 3x + 5y = 11b.
