(A case study is given below. Each subpart carries 1 mark each)

Ques 12 Any equation which can be put in the form ax + by + c = 0 where a, b and care real
numbers and a and b are not both zero, is called equation in two variables. The taxi fare in a
city is as follows:
For the first kilometre, the fare is 8 and for the subsequent distance it is 5 per km. Consider
distance covered as x the and total fare as y. Answer the following questions:

(i) What is the linear equation for the given situation?


(ii) If a person travels 20 km then how much does he have to pay?
(iii) If a person pays 153 then, find the distance covered by him.
(iv) For the first kilometre, if the fare is 10 and for the subsequent distance it is 20,
per km, then find the linear equation.
(v) If we express x = - 1 in the form ax + by + c = 0 then find the value of c.
