PowerPoint searches Bing when you insert an online picture. You can use various
keywords to find online images that are appropriate for your documents.

1. Display Slide 5. On the Insert tab, in the Images group, click Pictures, and

then click Online Pictures. With the insertion point in the Search box, type
water press , and wait a few seconds to search for images that contain
the keyword water and then compare your screen with Figure 2.7.

The results shown indicate the images are licensed under Creative
Commons, which, according to www.creativecommons.org is “a
nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity
and knowledge through free legal tools.” Creative Commons helps
people share and use their photographs, but does not allow companies
to sell them. For your college assignments, you can use these images so

When you insert an online image, PowerPoint might include a credit line below
the image. This includes copyright information such as author name and CC
(Creative Commons) licenses. When using the work of others, you should
appropriately cite your sources. For this exercise, you can delete this information

Smart guides are dashed lines that display on your slide when you are moving an
object to assist you with alignment.

1. On the View tab, in the Show group, verify that the Ruler check box is

selected and if necessary, select the check box. On the horizontal and
vertical rulers, notice that 0 displays in the center. Click the picture, and
then drag up so that the top edge of the picture aligns with the top edge of
the slide. Compare your screen with Figure 2.11.
Horizontally, the PowerPoint ruler indicates measurements from the
center of the slide out to the left and to the right. Vertically, the
PowerPoint ruler indicates measurements from the center up and down.

Another Way
On the Picture Format tab, in the Size group, click More to open the Format
Picture pane. On the Size and Properties tab, set the position by entering values
in the Horizontal position and Vertical position boxes measured from the top left
corner or the center of the slide. For this Activity, enter 7.5 in the Horizontal
position box and 0 in the Vertical position box.

Moving an Object by Using the Arrow Keys

When you crop a picture, you remove unwanted or unnecessary areas of the
picture.

1. Display Slide 6, and then select the picture. On the Picture Format tab, in

the Size group, click the upper portion of the Crop button to display the
crop handles on the edges of the picture. Compare your screen with Figure
2.13.

Use the PowerPoint crop handles like sizing handles to remove


unwanted areas of the picture.

An inserted picture is typically rectangular in shape; however, you can modify a


picture by changing its shape.

1. Display Slide 1, and then select the picture. On the Picture Format tab, in

the Size group, click the lower portion of the Crop button—the Crop arrow
—and then compare your screen with Figure 2.16.

2. Point to Crop to Shape to display a gallery of shapes. Under Basic Shapes,

in the first row, click the first shape—Oval—to change the picture’s shape
