Unit-1. Communication Skills LEARNING OBJECTIVE Demonstrate knowledge of various methods of communication. – verbal, non-verbal and visual. Question and Answer: 1. What is communication? Ans: The act of giving, receiving, and sharing information is known as communication. Sign and signals provide information. Communication can take the form of speaking, writing or any other medium. 2. What is the importance of communication? Ans: The three important of communications are Inform – we give facts or information to someone. Influence – sometimes we are required to influence or change someone in an indirect but usually important way. Express feelings - if you express your views or feelings to others in a healthy way to express them. 3. What are the seven elements that influence the communication skills? Ans: There are seven different factors which affecting perspective in communication- Language, Environment, Visual Perception, culture, prejudice, feelings, past experience. 4. Explain the elements in the communication cycle. Ans: Communication cycle has different elements which are divided into the following categories: Sender: In case of written message, the person who introduce or sends the message is known as sender. The sender sends a message or gives and can even ask for information. This is called encoding. Ideas: An idea is a plan or thought which may be presented as an opinion. Communication channel: It refer to medium or path such as phone or face to face talking or written message is transmitted to the person or an audience. Receiver: It might be a person or a group of person who is the reader, listener or observer of the message. The receiver replies to the sender called decoding of a message. Feedback: When a receiver communicates his/her response back to the sender, the process is called feedback. 5. What is verbal communication? Explain 2 types of verbal communication. Ans: Verbal communication is a common method of communication that enables direct understanding and interpretation. Verbal communication uses words to express. Types of verbal communication are: Oral or spoken communication: when communication is established through telephonic conversation, face to face conversation, etc. Written communication: When communication is established using written or typed messages in the form of an e-mail, SMS, or by using any other format including photos, videos, music,etc. 6. State the importance of effective communication. Ans: Communication is an important tool that lets us share our thoughts, emotions and ideas in an understandable, clear and efficient way. It helps us to inform, share knowledge, express feelings and influence others. 7. Mention any 2 disadvantages of using non-verbal communication. Ans: Following are the disadvantages of Non-Verbal Communication: 1. Non-verbal communication is unclear and imprecise since in this communication, there is no use of words or language which expresses clear meaning to the receiver. 2. Long conversation and necessary explanations are not possible. 8. Explain the different kinds of sentences with examples. Ans: Declarative sentence or assertive sentence: These sentence present the existing truth and provide information or fact. It always ends with full stop (.) Example: I take tea. Interrogative sentences: These are the questioning sentences and always end with a question mark? Example: What would you like to take? Exclamatory sentences: Exclamatory sentences express strong emotion or sudden reaction, such as joy, sorrow, excitement or wonder. It ends with exclamation mark (!) Example: Hurrah! We won the match! Imperative sentences: These type of sentence show an order, command, advice or request. It may end with (.) or (!) Example: Keep your mouth shut (!) 9. Explain the importance of non-verbal and visual communication. Ans: A non-verbal way of communication can make our message stronger and it may also help to adjust our behavior according to the listener’s reaction. It mostly helps in situations when we are unable to send a proper message verbally. Visual communication uses images, drawings, signs, graphics, typography, etc. It is an easier method of communication. 10. What do you mean by “Barriers to effective communication”? Ans: Barriers to communication are the obstacles or difficulties that come in the way of communication. They are the problems that affect transmission of information from sender to receiver. For example: noice, network problem, doubts, etc. 11. Write short note on writing skills. Ans: When we talk about writing content for a particular topic, ideas start generating in our consciousness. This sudden reaction of our mind results in formation of sentences, which communicates the thought. There are certain aspects through which we can improve our writing skills, like: Phrases: It can be a short or a long sentence and give a complete meaning when attached to a principal clause or an independent sentence. Active and Passive Voice: In ‘Active Voice’, the subject performs the action stated by the verb. In ‘Passive Voice’, the subject is acted upon by the verb. Kinds of Sentences: Assertive/Declarative Sentences, Interrogative Sentences, Exclamatory Sentences, Imperative Sentences. Parts of Sentence: A sentence may be described as a group of words that have a subject and a predicate. ‘Subject’ is a person or thing which does an action, while a ‘Verb’ describes the action done by the subject, which is received by an ‘Object’. Types of Object: There are two types of object in a sentence, direct or indirect. The objects which are directly ‘acted on’ by the verb are called direct objects. The indirect object answers the question ‘to whom’ and ‘for whom’. Construction of Paragraph: The sentences used in writing a paragraph contribute to convey a common idea, as each sentence is framed according to the topic. The ideas while writing a paragraph may differ according to the required details.
