Implementation of Community Service
Implementation of Community Service
Initially an Orientation Program for providing community service to be conducted explaining the
benefits of community service and how this along with academics would facilitate students build their
professional career. Perhaps, it may not be a bad idea to conduct this orientation program with the
help of corporate professionals who may speak on its relevance in their organizations.
For performing community service, identify community needs, and ways in which students can
address those needs through community service with a learning component attached to it and how this
learning helps them in their professional career.
Preparation includes students identifying a community need, researching how to address that need,
and developing a plan of action. It may also include soliciting necessary support within the college
community area and as well as building relationships with nonprofit/community organizations.
Community personnel and students should brainstorm possible barriers that could hinder
implementation of a successful program/project.
Identify a few faculty mentors for facilitating students to provide community service, slightly reduce
their teaching load, mentor the faculty to in turn mentor students on the benefits of providing
community service.
Part of every preparation process is generating student excitement about the opportunity to participate
in community service. Suggestions for ways in which to accomplish this include
Inviting a student or alumni who has participated in community service to speak
Inviting a community member to speak to the students on related issues
Inviting someone from a community-based organization to speak
Organizing a field trip to service sites so that students can see the setting first hand
Publicizing what last year’s students achieved participating in community service.
Identify community services that we may be able to provide by discussing with community persons
by inviting them to the college.
Allocate budget for this purpose.
Allocate time slots for providing community services/projects/problems by discussing with the
community persons.
Discuss with students on identified community services and match the services vis-a-vis students'
interests
Accordingly, form various groups of students and involve them in community service based on
their already identified interests.

Facilitate students to brainstorm projects/problems faced by community that would also meet
their curricular objectives which are appropriate, interesting, and sometimes exciting.
These projects form the basis for further exploration by students.
Students can share the results of their exploration with other classmates so that a variety of
community sites and related issues are addressed within a class setting.
If a student is working independently, he/she may discuss his/her research results with faculty as
moderator in classroom.
Students write a report on the community service provided. Further, students answer the following
questions along with the report being submitted.
Who all are the people did the student meet and describes them.
Describes the place of the community learning. Includes aspects such as ventilation, ambience,
surroundings. etc.
Facilitate students with the following questions to make him realize his learning experience as part of
providing community service as a reflection of his learning.

Community service learning can be linked to any curriculum area and can support student learning
expectations set forth in the Curriculum Framework. The following list contains a few areas and skills
that can be applied through community service learning.
Make the students aware of the following aspects given in the table below, that one would learn
through community service by relating each aspect to the course vis-a-vis community service
provided.
This should be done on a continuous sustainable basis by inviting feedback both from students
and as well as community.
Publicize it and bring out a newsletter alternate month.
Give a small incentive for the group whose services have been appreciated most by the
community.
