COURSE DESCRIPTION:
- CPTR 170 Microcomputer Hardware
- Monday and Wednesday 12:15-1:30pm

- This course seeks This course focuses on the study of modern microcomputer hardware
and prepares the student for A+ Hardware certification by providing instruction on system
configuration, installation, upgrades, diagnosis, repair, preventive maintenance, and safety
of vendor neutral PC Hardware.

GOALS/AIMS

• Enhance critical thinking, promote a logical approach to problem solving and equip
students with up-to-date skills in configuring, troubleshooting and maintain personal
computers.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

• The content of this course is delivered using a combination of class lectures, class exercises
and practical sessions. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their
understanding of the material on a practical project, assignments and final exam.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THIS COURSE


1. Ask questions and participate in class. Questioning is the key to learning.
2. Own the required textbook and acquaint yourself with the topics (guided by the course
outline) before coming to class. Being familiar with the material will enable students to ask
questions about the parts of the material they did not understand and prepare for
participation in activities beyond lectures.
3. Attend tutorial sessions. Students are expected to prepare the relevant tutorial prior to the
weekly session.
4. Read and prepare for class tests\quizzes.

COURSE ASSESSMENT
1. Provides a means for students to adequately demonstrate their understanding of the
course content and progress in the development of their programming skills.
2. Serves as an objective instrument for measuring student development and awarding a
final grade.

1. Class attendance is mandatory. As such, the Class Absence Policy of the University will
be applied, i.e. absences exceeding 20% of the total class hours for the semester will lead
to an F grade (refer to handbook/bulletin). Additionally, students are required to be in a
class on time.
2. Assignments and tests reinforce the student’s understanding of the material covered in
lectures. Performance in assignments and tests will contribute to the final grade.
Notification will be given in advance of pending exams. Late assignments are unacceptable
and will incur a penalty.
3. All forms of dishonesty will be dealt with as outlined in the University Student Handbook.
Forbidden conduct includes: plagiarism, copyright infringement and any other form of
impropriety. Cases involving suspected dishonesty would be forwarded to the Office of the
Vice President for Student Development for placement in the student’s file. In cases

involving known dishonesty, the student will be required to withdraw from the class with
a failing grade.
