allowed me to adapt my style of learning and working to become a better student. I made many
mistakes, as does everyone in the transition from high school to college, but I am thankful that I
In high school, especially English classes, I never felt truly challenged. I was always able
to pass and even excel in some classes without putting much thought or effort into my work.
Going from that to college was a huge change, and I soon realized that I had to actively engage
myself in learning if I wanted to succeed. I gradually discovered the learning strategies that
worked best for me: finding a quiet campus location (not my dorm), turning off my phone
notifications, using the “focus” mode in Microsoft Word, and drowning out my thoughts with
brown noise. I found that this instantly improved my attention span and ability to stay on task.
Reading was another issue. I rarely find enjoyment in reading books, unless they are very
specific to what I enjoy learning about. I would always much rather watch a movie or YouTube
video. Thankfully, I found strategies to trick my brain into reading. The hardest part of reading
for me was getting started, so I utilized text to speech or audiobook features to better engage
myself. Learning visually is also helpful to me, as I sometimes struggle picturing in my head
what I’m reading. To help with this, I would search images or YouTube videos related to the
I am still discovering who I am as a student and scholar, however I have realized a few of
my strengths. I am great at critical thinking and problem solving. I routinely ask myself
questions and I can never rest until I figure out the answer. However, I do struggle routinely with
formulating my thinking into words. That, I believe, is my main struggle with writing. My usual
process for writing papers is to sit down and type out whatever I’m thinking, and then go through
and make changes. It’s not an awful strategy, but I know it can be improved. Throughout this
semester, though, I did notice my writing improve substantially from senior year of high school,
in quality and formatting. Occasionally this semester, I have even found writing rather enjoyable.
This makes doing written assignments entirely easier, as I don’t have the attitude of getting it
done just to get it done. This also makes me more confident when approaching a writing
effectively and efficiently, and incentivizing myself to complete assignments. I discovered, this
semester, the feeling of satisfaction from completing work in a timely manner and the relief from
having the burden lifted off my shoulders. I’m glad I was able to discover so much about my
learning and work style and that I was able to improve it as quickly as possible.
