University of Chittagong

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Second Year B.Sc. (Honours) Special Examination, 2023
Course No.: BMB-209; Course Title: Biostatistics
Full Marks: 75 Time: 4 Hors

[Answer any FIVE question. All questions carry equal marks.]

1. a) Define biostatistics. Discuss its characteristics and functions. 5

b) Discuss the importance of statistical analysis in the field of biochemistry and molecular
biology. 5
c) What is meant by variable? Describe various types of variable with example. 5

2. a) Define primary and secondary data with example. 4

b) What is frequency and frequency distribution? Briefly discuss different steps involved in
constructing a frequency distribution. 7
c) What are the charts and diagrams do you use to present statistical data graphically?
From which graphs, it is possible to locate median and mode? 4

3. a) What is meant by central tendency of a data set? What are the measures of central 4
tendency? Define any one of them.
b) Discuss the uses of mean and mode. Which measure do you think as the best measure, 5
give reasons.
c) Calculate mean, median and mode for the following scores: 6
25, 36, 41, 28, 29, 32, 39, 37, 34, 34, 37, 35, 30, 36, 31, 31

4. a) What does dispersion measure? Mention the names of various measure of dispersion. 4
b) Define variance and coefficient of variation. Why sometimes coefficient of variation is 5
better than standard deviation as a measure of dispersion?
c) In two factories A and B engaged in the same industry, the average weekly wages and
standard deviations are as follows: 6
Average weekly wages S.D. of wages
Factory No. of wage earners
(TK.) (TK.)

A 460 50 100

B 490 40 80

(i) Which factory has greater uniformity in the distribution of wages?

(ii) What is the mean and standard deviation of all the workers in two factories taken
together?

5. a) With the help of scatter diagrams illustrate weak, moderate, strong and perfect 5
correlation.
b) Distinguish between correlation and regression. 4
c) The following data give the ages and blood pressure (upper) of 8 women: 6
Ages (in years) (x): 56 42 36 47 49 60 72 63
Blood pressure (y): 147 125 118 128 145 155 160 149
(i) Fit a regression equation of y on x.
(ii) Predict the blood pressure of a woman whose age is 65 years.
6. a) Define the following terms with examples: 5
Random experiment, sample space, equally likely events, mutually exclusive events.
b) Define classical probability and conditional probability. State additive and 4
multiplicative laws of probability for two events.
c) Suppose a random variable X follows binomial distribution with n=8 and p=0.4. Write 6
down the probability function of X.
Also find (i) P(X=5) and (ii) P(3<X<7).

7. a) Define: Hypothesis, Test of hypothesis, Null hypothesis, Type-I error, Type-II 5

error and Level of significance.
b) Discuss different steps involved in test of hypothesis. 4
c) What is contingency table? The following table gives the number of good and
bad quality of products produced by each of three shifts in a factory: 6
Product quality
Shifts Total
Good Bad
Day 750 100 850
Evening 570 110 680
Night 350 120 470
Total 1670 330 2000
Test whether there is any association between shift and product quality at 5% level of
significance [Use appropriate critical value: ❑20.05 ,2=5.99, ❑20.05 ,3=7.81].

8. a) Explain the following terms: 5

Experimental design, Treatment, Experimental unit, Yield, Experimental error.
b) Discuss the principles of experimental design. What are the basic designs. 5
5
c) Define: Population, Sample, Sampling unit, sampling frame. Describe the simple
random sampling.
