I. Learning Objectives
At the end of a 60–minute lesson, at least 75% of the students should be able to achieve
the following with at least 75% level of proficiency:
A. Define the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and percentiles
and;
B. Illustrate the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and percentiles,
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic : Grade 10: Measures of Position

III. Procedures
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
2. Prayer
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance
B. Review
 What comes to your mind when you hear the word measurement?
 What are the things that we usually measure?
C. Motivation
The teacher will present different pictures that will be flashed on the television
Based on the picture you see,
a. How many ripe tomatoes are there?
What is the percentage of the ripe
tomatoes?
b. How many over-ripe tomatoes are
there? What is the percentage of the
over-ripe tomatoes?
a. What is the closest planet to the
sun?
b. What planet is farthest from the
sun?
c. What is the biggest planet?
d. How many planets are located
from the sun to the fourth ellipse?

D. Presentation of the Lesson

After conducting the activity, what you have noticed? What do you think is our
topic for today?
E. Development of the Lesson
Measure of Position – is a measure by which the position of data is determined through its
value.
Median – is the middle number that divides the data into two equal parts.
Quartiles – are values which divide a list of ordered number into four equal parts. There
are three quartiles which are denoted as Q1,Q2 , ∧Q3.

Example 1: Animal Race

The quartiles can be interpreted in several ways. For 𝑄1, we can claim that the pig, dog,
and rooster belong to the 25% of the group that arrived latest in the group. The pig, dog, rooster,
monkey, sheep and horse belong to the 50% group that arrived later than the rest of the group. The
pig, dog, rooster, monkey, sheep, horse, snake, dragon, and rabbit belong to the 75% group that
arrived later than the rest of the group.
Exercise 1.
You are one of the students who fall in line during the flag ceremony. The earliest student
will be in front followed by the next student who will arrive. If you are 8 students in line and you
arrived earlier than 6 of your classmates. In which quartile do you belong? If you are the fourth
student to arrive, what percent of the student arrive later than you?

Deciles – are values that divide the data set into ten equal parts. There are nine deciles which are
denoted as D1 , D2 , D3 , D4 , D5 , D6 , D7 , D8 ,∧¿ D ¿
9

Example 1:
The Top 10 countries ranked by TikTok users in 2021 are represented by this table. If you
are living in Vietnam, in what decile do you belong? If you are living in UK, how many countries
have greater TikTok users than your country?
Percentiles – are values that divide the data set into 100 equal parts. There are ninety-nine
percentiles which are denoted as P1 , P2 , P3 ,........... , P99.

Example 1:

You are the fourth tallest person in a group of 20. 80% of people are shorter than you. That means
you are at the 80th percentile. If your height is 1.85m then "1.85m" is the 80th percentile height
in that group.

Generalization
1. What are the different measures of position?
2. How do we define quartiles, deciles and percentiles?
IV. Evaluation
1. You are the fourth tallest student in a group of 10.
a. How many percent of students are shorter than you?
b. How many percent of the students are taller than you?
c. In what quartile do you belong?
2. Mrs. Marasigan is a veterinarian. One morning, she asked her secretary to record the
service time for 10 customers. The following are service times in minutes. (55, 28, 46, 32,
25, 28, 37, 47, 52, 17). Find the value of the 2nd and 8th decile.

V. Assignment
1. Mrs. Labonete gave a test to her students in Statistics. The students finished their test in 35
minutes. This time is the 2.5th decile of the allotted time. What does this mean?
APPENDIX A

KEY ANSWERS IN EVALUATION

1. A. 50 %
B. 20%
C. Quartile 3
2. 2nd decile = 28
8th decile = 47
KEY ANSWER IN ASSIGNMENT
1. This means that 25 percent of the learners finished the test. It means the student
finish the test in a short period of time.
