Noted:
For letter a) one of the dice shows a 3 if it is known that the sum is 7.
Let A be the event that the sum of the numbers is 7.
Let B be the event that a 3 appears on one of the dice.
A = {(1,6), (2,5), (3,4), (4,3), (5,2), (6,1)} n(A) = 6
B = {(1,3), (2,3), (3,3), (4,3), (5,3), (6,3), (3,1), (3,2), (3,4), (3,5), (3,6)} n(B)= 11
A ∩ B = {(3,4), (4,3)}
P(A∩B) = 2
Therefore, the probability that 3 will appear given that the sum is 7, denoted by
𝑃(𝐵|𝐴) =
P ( A ∩B)
P( A )
𝑃(𝐵|𝐴) =
2
6
𝑃(𝐵|𝐴) =
1

For letter b) the sum is 7 if it is known that one of the dice shows a 3.
In this case, the events are interchanged so we simply rewrite the formula to denote the
probability that the sum is 7 given that one of the numbers is 3.
𝑃(A|B) =
P ( A ∩B)
.
P( B)
𝑃(A|B) =
2

Example 2: Three hundred fifty returning OFW’s were quarantined in two different locations,
Nova Hotel and Diplomat Lodge. After the mandatory 14- day quarantine, they were interviewed
whether they were satisfied or dissatisfied on the services available dwuring the quarantine. The
following table summarizes their responses.
If one person from the 350 OFW’s is chosen at random, find the probability that the person
a) is not satisfied given that he stayed at Diplomat Lodge.
b) stayed at Nova Hotel given that he is satisfied.
c) is known to have stayed at Diplomat Lodge and was satisfied.
For letter a) probability that the person is not satisfied given that he stayed at Diplomat Lodge.
Let A be the event that the person is not satisfied.
Let B be the event that the person stayed at Diplomat Lodge
Then substitute the given values to the formula:
𝑃(A|B) =
P ( A ∩B)
.
P( B)
𝑃(A|B) =
26
153
Therefore, the probability that the person is not satisfied given that he stayed at Diplomat Hotel is
26
.
153
For letter b) probability that the person stayed at Nova Hotel given that he is satisfied.
Let A be the event that the person stayed at Nova Hotel.
Let B be the event that the person is satisfied.
Then substitute the given values to the formula:
𝑃(A|B) =
P ( A ∩B)
.
P( B)
𝑃(A|B) =
143
270
143
Therefore, the probability that the person stayed at Nova Hotel given that he is satisfied is .
270
For letter c) probability that the person is known to have stayed at Diplomat Lodge was satisfied.
Let A be the event that the person stayed at Diplomat Hotel.
Let B be the event that the person was satisfied.
Then substitute the given values to the formula:
𝑃(𝐵|𝐴) =
P ( A ∩B)
P( A )
𝑃(𝐵|𝐴) =
127
153
Therefore, the probability that the person is known to have stayed at Diplomat Lodge and was
127
satisfied is .

GROUP ACTIVITY:
Directions: Solve the problems involving conditional probability and explain it in front of
the class afterwards. (Time allotted: 10 mins)
1. The probability of a student passing in science is ⅘ and the of the student passing in both
science and maths is ½. What is the probability of that student passing in maths knowing
that he passed in science?
2. In a survey among few people, 60% read Hindi newspaper, 40% read English newspaper
and 20% read both. If a person is chosen at random and if he already reads English
newspaper find the probability that he also reads Hindi newspaper.
3. In a class, 40% of the students like Mathematics and 25% of students like Physics and 15%
like both the subjects. One student selects at random, find the probability that he likes
Physics if it is known that he likes Mathematics.
Generalization
1. What is conditional probability?
2. What is the formula use in solving conditional probability?
3. How do we solve conditional probability?
IV. Evaluation
Directions: Answer the following problems involving conditional probability. Show your complet
solutions and encircle your final answer.
1. In a survey among Grade 10 parents, 68% have smartphones. 22% have basic phones and
smart phones. What is the probability that a parent has a basic phone given that he/she has
a smart phone?
2. A mathematics teacher gave her class two tests. Twenty-five percent of the class
passed both test and 42% of the class passed the first test. What percent of those who
passed the first test also passed the second test?
V. Assignment
Directions: On a one whole sheet of paper. Answer the following problems involving conditional
probability.
1. A jar contains black and white marbles. Two marbles are chosen without replacement. The
probability of selecting a black marble and then a white marble is 0.34, and the probability
of selecting a black marble on the first draw is 0.47. What is the probability of selecting a
white marble on the second draw, given that the first marble drawn was black?
2. The probability that it is Friday and that a student is absent is 0.03. Since there are 5 school
days in a week, the probability that it is Friday is 0.2. What is the probability that a student
is absent given that today is Friday?
APPENDIX A

1.
P( A )
𝑃(𝐵|𝐴) =

0.68
𝑃(𝐵|𝐴) =

Therefore, the probability that a parent has a basic phone given that he/she has a
smart phone is 32.35%.

Therefore, the probability that the second test was passed given that the first test
was passed is 60%.
