● A significant breakthrough in Large Area Additive Manufacturing (LAAM) has been achieved at
the DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT Hyderabad.
● The project is a collaboration between IIT Hyderabad, DRDO’s Defence Research &
Development Laboratory (DRDL), and industry partners.
● The LAAM system uses Powder-based Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technology for
manufacturing rocket components.

● Iran unveiled a new long-range ballistic missile and tested an advanced anti-ship cruise missile,

● Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attended a ceremony in Tehran to introduce the Etemad,
a ballistic missile with a range of 1,700 kilometers (1,060 miles).
● The missile’s range places much of the Middle East, including Israel, within striking distance.
● The event coincided with Iran’s National Aerospace Day and precedes the 46th anniversary of
the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Japan launches navigation satellite on new flagship rocket for improved positioning system
● The H3 rocket, carrying the Michibiki 6 satellite, successfully lifted off from the Tanegashima
Space Centre on a southwestern Japanese island.
● The satellite separated from the rocket as planned about 29 minutes after lift-off, according
to Makoto Arita, H3 project manager for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
● Officials stated the satellite is expected to reach its targeted geospatial orbit in about two weeks.

consecutive flight-trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) from Chandipur,
Odisha.

Budget Allocation:
• The Union Budget for 2024-25 allocated ₹6.81 lakh crore for defence, including ₹1.8 lakh crore

• 75% of the modernisation outlay is earmarked for domestic procurement, reflecting a strong push

India, Japan to conduct 6th edition of joint military exercise Dharma Guardian from Feb 15 to March 9,
2025
● The 6th edition of Dharma Guardian will be held at Mount Fuji, Japan from February 25 to March
9, 2025.
● The 5th edition of Joint Military Exercise ‘DHARMA GUARDIAN’ between the Indian Army and
the Japan Ground Self Defence Force commenced at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan.
● The Exercise is scheduled to be conducted from 25th February to 9th March 2024.
● The 1st edition of the Dharma Guardian exercise was held in 2018 at Counter Insurgency

● India and Japan prioritize other joint military exercises, such as the Malabar naval

Development Organisation (DRDO), has signed an MoU with MIDHANI for the indigenous
development of high-strength, high-toughness special-grade steel “MDN100” for aeronautical
applications, including its use in the 5th generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
● The steel, known for its good forgeability, will be utilized in highly stressed aircraft parts,
offering weight-saving benefits.

Defence Ministry inks ₹697 crore contracts with Action Construction Equipment Limited (ACE), JCB
India for military equipment
● The Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth ₹697.35 crore with ACE Limited and JCB India
Limited for procuring 1,868 Rough Terrain Fork Lift Trucks (RTFLT) for the Indian Army, Indian
Air Force, and Indian Navy.
● The contracts were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary R K Singh.
● RTFLT is a critical equipment that assists in combat and logistics support by reducing manual
handling of stores and enhancing operational effectiveness.
● The procurement falls under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, boosting domestic defence
manufacturing and generating employment, benefiting MSMEs.
● The Ministry also signed a ₹1,220.12 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for
procuring 149 Software Defined Radios (SDRs) for the Indian Coast Guard.

Indian Coast Guard conducts successful ‘Sagar Kavach’ coastal security exercise
● The two-day coastal security exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’ in West Bengal concluded on February 22,
2025 coordinated by the Coast Guard Region North East with the State Coastal Security
Operation Centre (SCSOC) serving as the nerve center.
● The exercise validated the coastal security SOPs through various drills along the 158 km
coastline, simulating scenarios such as hijacking of fishing boats, smuggling of contraband, IED
