ELECTRIC DIPOLE AND GAUSS LAW.
1. Sixtyfour drops of radius 0.02 m and each carrying a charge of 5 μC are combined to
form a bigger drop. Find how the surface density of electrification will change if no
charge is lost. (1:4)
2. Obtain the formula for the electric field due to a long thin wire of uniform linear
charge density λ without using Gauss’s law.
3. A charge is distributed uniformly over a ring of radius ‘a’. Obtain an expression for
the electric intensity E at a point on the axis of the ring. Hence show that for points
at large distances from the ring, it behaves like a point charge.
4. A thing semicircular ring of radius a is charged uniformly and the charge per unit
length is λ. Find the electric field at its centre. (λ/2πε0 )
5. Two charges, one + 5μC and another -5 μC are placed 1 mm apart. Calculate the
dipole moment. (5 x 10-9 Cm)
6. An electric dipole, when held at 30° with respect to a uniform electric field of 104
N/C experiences a torque of 9 x 10-26 Nm. Calculate dipole moment of the dipole.

7. An electric dipole consists of two opposite charges of magnitude 1/3 x 10-7 C,
separated by 2 cm. The dipole is placed in an external field of 3 x 107 NC-1. What

8. Calculate the electric field due to an electric dipole of length 10 cm having charges
of 1 μC at an equatorial point 12 cm from the centre of the dipole.(4.096 x 10-5N/C)
9. Two point charges each of 5 μC but opposite in sign, are placed 4 cm apart.
Calculate the electric field intensity at a point distant 4 cm from the midpoint on the

10. Two charges + 10 μC are placed 5.00 mm apart. Determine the electric field at (a) a
point P on the axis of the dipole 15 cm away from its centre O on the side of the
positive charge, (b) a point Q, 15 cm away from O on a line passing through O and
normal to the axis of the dipole. (2.66 x 105 N/C, 1.33 x 105 N/C)
11. The force experienced by a unit charge when placed at a distance of 0.10 m from the
middle of an electric dipole on its axial line is 0.025 N and when it is placed at a
distance of 0.2 m, the force is reduced to 0.002 N. Calculate the dipole length.(0.10)
12. If 𝐸 = 6 𝑖 + 3 𝑗 + 4 𝑘 , calculate the electric flux through a surface of area 20 units
in Y-Z plane. (120 units)
13. A circular plane sheet of radius 10 cm is placed in a uniform electric field of 5 x 105
NC-1, making an angle of 60° with the field. Calculate the electric flux through the

14. A cylinder is placed in a uniform electric field 𝐸 with its axis parallel to the field.
show that the total electric flux through the cylinder is zero. (Zero)
15. Calculate the number of electric lines of force originating from a charge of 1 C.

16. A positive charge of 17.7 μC is placed at the centre of a hollow sphere of radius 0.5

(iii) How will the electric flux through sphere S1 change, if a medium of dielectric

21. Two long straight parallel wires carry charges λ1 and λ2 per unit length. The
separation between their axes is d. Find the magnitude of the force exerted on unit

22. An electric dipole consists of charges + 2 x 10-8 C, separated by a distance of 2 mm.


It is placed near a long line charge of density 4.0 x 10-4 Cm-1, as shown in the figure,

29. A metallic spherical shell has an inner radius R1 and outer radius R2. A charge Q is
placed at the centre of the spherical cavity. What will be the surface charge density
