First Pre-Board Examination.

Session 2024-25

Class 12 - Physics.

Time Allowed: 3 hour


Maximum Marks: 70

General Instructions:

Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper. They must NOT start writing during this time.All questions
are compulsory.

This question paper is divided into 4 Sections, A, B, C and D as follows :

Section A: Question number 1 is of 14 marks. All parts of this question are compulsory.

Section B: Question numbers 2 to 8 carry 2 marks each .

Section C: Question numbers 9 to 17 carry 3 marks each.

Section D: Question numbers 18 to 20 are long-answer type questions and carry 5 marks each.

The intended marks for questions are given in brackets [ ].

All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as and adjacent to the rest of the answer.

Answers to sub parts of the same question must be given in one place only.

A list of useful physical constants is given at the end of this paper.

A simple scientific calculator without a programmable memory may be used for calculations.

Section A -14 Marks

Question -1

(A) In question (i) to (vii) ,choose the correct alternative a,b,c or d for each of the question
given below :

(i) Magnetic susceptibility of a diamagnetic substance

(a) Decrease with the increase in its temperature. (b) Is not affected by the change in its temp.

(c) Increase with increase in its temperature. (d) First increase then decrease with temperature in its

(ii) A current coil having N turns of radius R carries a current I and produces a magnetic field T at
its centre O.

(B) Answer all question given below briefly. (7)

(i) What is meant by coherent source of light ?

(ii) In young's double slit experiment , what is the path difference between the two light waves
forming 5th bright fringe on the screen ?

(iii) What is an ideal transformer ?


(iv) Two bulbs A and B are marked 220 V-40 W and 220 V-60 W respectively.Which one, A and B, has
greater resistance?
(v) State the SI unit of magnetic dipole moment.

(vi) Calculate the linear momentum of a proton of energy 9× 10-19 J.

(vii) State the condition for a balance whetstone bridge.

(i) What is meant by the statement “ Relative permittivity of water is 81” ?

Draw the graph showing the variation of resistance of(a) a capacitor (b) an inductor with frequency of
an AC source.

A dielectric slab of the electric constant k and thickness t is introduced between the two plates of capacitor
of plate separation d ( > t) and common area A. The capacitance of this system is given as:

How does the capacitance see modify in each of the following case ?
(a) The dielectric slab cover half the distance of separation between the two plates.
(b) The whole space between the plate is filled with the dielectric

Calculate magnetic flux density at a point on the axis of a long air cored solenoid having to 2500 turns
per metre when it is carrying a current of 2.5 A.

Two long straight wire X and Y are kept in vacuum, parallel to each other. They carry currents of 100
ampere and 50 ampere respectively in the same direction. Calculate the perpendicular distance
between the two wire if the force per unit length acting on wire Y ,due to current flowing in X is
0.02 Nm-1 .

Or

A moving coil galvanometer has a coil of resistance of 39 ohm. It shows a full scale deflection for a
current of 50 mA. Calculate the value of the shunt required to convert it into an ammeter having a
range of 0 to 2 ampere.

Draw a labelled diagram of potentiometer circuit using to measure internal resistance of the given cell X.

(i) Which one of the following electromatic radiation has maximum frequency
? Microwave, Ultraviolet radiation , X-rays or infrared radiations .
(ii) Which electromagnetic radiations are used in aircraft navigation ?

Section C - 27 Marks

Question -9. [3]

Using Huygen's wave theory , prove snell's law for refraction of light.

Question -10 [3]

Draw a neat and labelled ray diagram of a compound microscope when the final image is formed at the
least distance of distinct vision (D).

Or

Derive Lens Makers formula. Where symbols have their usual meanings.
Question -11 [3]

Photoelectrons are emitted from a metal surface when ultraviolet light of wavelength 300 nm is
incident on it. The minimum negative potential required to stop the emission of electrons is 0.54 V.
Calculate (i) The energy of the incident Photon (ii) The maximum kinetic energy of the photo electrons
emitted (iii) The work function of the metal.Express all the answers in eV.

Given: h= 6.63×10-34 j-s,c=3.0×108ms-1 and 1 eV= 1.60 ×10-19 J]


Question -12. [3]

Teacher explains the topic photoelectric effect in the class and to evaluate understanding of student he
asks some conceptual questions.State whether the responses of the students ,in each case, are correct
or incorrect . Give the reason for your answer.

(i) Teacher: Why are alkali metals most suited as photosensitive metals?

Student: Alkali metals have high value of work function.

(ii) Teacher: Does each incident Photon essentially eject and electron ?

Student: Yes, if frequency of incident radiation is greater than the work function of the metal.

(iii) Teacher: Does the Stopping potential in photoelectric emission depend upon the frequency of
the incident radiation ?

Student: Yes it depends on the frequency of incident radiation.

Write down the expression for the magnetic field due to a short bar magnet (magnetic dipole)at a point
on the (i) axis (ii) equatorial line of the dipole.

Question -14 [3]

Show that the effective power or equivalent power P of two thin lenses kept in contact with each other is
given by. P=P1+P2.

Question -15. [3]

Obtain an expression for electric potential V at a point which lies on the axis ( end on position ) of an
electric dipole, having length 2l and dipole moment 'P'.

State ampere circuital law and its proof

Question -16. [3]

An electrical circuit shown in figure below. Apply Kirchhoff’s law of electrical networks to any two loops
and calculate the value of current I1 and I2.
Question -17 [3]

A Concave mirror produces a real, four times magnified image of an object place at 10 cm in front of it.
Find the position of the image and the radius of curvature of the mirror.

Section D-15 Marks

Question -18 [5]

(i) The refractive index for a material for red,violet and yellow lights are 1.515 , 1.523 and 1.519
respectively . Calculate and dispersive power of the material. If the main deviation is 40o ,then what
will be the angular dispersion produced by the prism of this material?

(ii) The figure below shows the position of a point object O,two Lenses ,a plane mirror and the final
image I which coincides with the object. The focal length of the convex lens is 20 cm .calculate the
focal length of concave lens.

Or
Convex lens of focal length 1 cm and 5 cm are used in compound microscope . An object is placed at a
distance of 1.1 cm from objective and final image is seen at least distance of distinct vision . Find the
separation between the objective and eye-piece. Also find its magnification.(D=25cm).

Question -19. [5]

(i) The work function of casium is 2.3 eV.Find (a) the threshold frequency for caesium,and

(b) the wavelength of the incident light if the photocurrent is brought to zero by a stopping potential of
0.60 V.

(ii) An electron and a proton have same the de-Broglie wavelength associated with them .How are
their kinetic energies related to each other.

Or

An 80 ohm resistor , a 1.0 H inductor and a 40 microfarad capacitor are connected in series in an AC
supply of 220 V such that the circuit draws the maximum current .At this stage ,calculate (i)
Resonance frequency of the circuit (ii) capacitive reactance of the circuit. (iii) Impedance of the
circuit . (iv) current flowing through the circuit .(v) Phase difference between a capacitive and
inductive voltages.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

In the year 1801, Thomas Young, a British scientist performed an experiment using monochromatic light
incident on two narrow, identical and rectangular slits. He obtained a series of alternate bride and dark
band called fringes. A German scientists, fraunhofer performed another experiment using only one
slit.He also got a series of alternate bride and dark fringes. Both these phenomenon could not be
explained by Corpuscular theory of light put forward by sir Isaac Newton. Hence,scientists had to apply
wave theory of light which was put forward by Christian Huygen,who was a contemporary of Newton.

(i) From and Young's double slit experiment,what do you infer about the nature of light ?

(ii) In Young's double slit experiment , what will be happen if

(a) Screen is brought close to the to slits?

(b) One of the slits is closed ?

(iii) What is the phenomenon discovered by Fraunhofer called ?

(iv) State any one difference between the phenomenon discovered by Young and that by Fraunho
