GD&T Symbol Application Reference Chart

GD&T Symbol Symbol Typical Features Use When... Functional Purpose

Straightness Shafts, edges, center axes You need the feature to be straight (form only)
Ensures minimal waviness in long features

Flatness Mating surfaces Surface must not have high/low spots Prevents rocking or gaps in contact surfaces

Circularity Cylinders, cones, holes Need to control roundness only Maintains fit, rotation quality

Cylindricity Shafts, bores Need straightness + roundness together Ensures round, straight cylinders

Profile of a Line Complex curves Curved feature must follow ideal shape Controls contour shape in 2D

Profile of a Surface Castings, free-form surfaces Full surface needs tight form control Ensures complex or irregular shapes are accurate

Angularity Chamfers, angled faces Needs precise angle between surfaces Prevents misalignment in angled interfaces

Perpendicularity Holes, faces, ribs Must be exactly 90 to another feature Ensures vertical or square interfaces

Parallelism Rails, slots, opposing surfaces Features must remain same direction Maintains orientation between surfaces

Position Holes, slots, pins Location of feature must be exact Ensures hole/pin alignment in assemblies

Concentricity Shaft-hub systems Feature center needs to align with datum Balances rotating parts, avoids wobble

Symmetry Slots, lobes Feature must be centered between others Prevents imbalance in mirrored parts

Circular Runout Shafts, faces Rotating part needs smooth spinning Controls variation at a single circular cross-section

Total Runout Spindles, precision rotary parts Entire surface needs to spin evenly Controls wobble over full surface area
