Worksheet 8.2
Writing in complete sentences and
comprehension
1 Sofia and Zara conducted some experiments to find out if the reactions they tried were
exothermic or endothermic. One of the reactions they tried was the reaction between
sodium hydrogencarbonate and citric acid.
Explain how they would find out if this reaction is an exothermic or endothermic one.
Write in complete sentences. The following words may be useful.

start difference temperature increased

decreased final thermometer

2 Read these two paragraphs and answer the questions.

Rust is formed when iron reacts with oxygen in the air. The product is iron oxide. Rust is only
formed when both oxygen and water are present. The water is not part of the equation for
rusting, but it is needed for it to happen.

If an iron girder that supports a building rusts it could be dangerous. The rust means that the
girder no longer has the properties of iron and is no longer able to support the building. In order
to prevent rusting iron may be painted or galvanised (covered with a layer of zinc).

a What is the scientific name for rust?

iron oxide

b Explain what is meant by ‘the properties of iron’.
Give an example of two of the properties of iron.

c How does painting or galvanising iron prevent it from rusting?

It applies a layer of paint blocking

d What are the reactants in the reaction to form rust?
