Lesson 20 English 5
Lesson 20 English 5
But the young moth would not heed the words of either parent. So every day at dusk when the star came
out, he would start flying toward it, and every morning at dawn he would crawl back home worn out with his
vain endeavor.
One day his father looked at him and said, “You haven't burned a wing in months. And it looks like you
have no plans to have any. Your brother and sisters have gone out to fly around the street lamps and all of them
have had some burns doing so. And you, a big strapping moth without a mark?"
Just the same, the moth left his father's house every day to fly toward that star and not around street
lamps-not even house lamps. He went right on trying to reach the star, which was four and one-third light years,
or twenty-five trillion miles away. The moth just thought that it couldn't reach the star because it was caught in
the top branches of an elm. And of course he never reached the star, yet he kept on trying. Night after night he
would try. Then the moth grew very old and started thinking and believing that indeed he had reached the star.
And so he went around saying this. This made him very proud and thus lived to a great old age. Meanwhile, his
parents and brother and sisters had all been burned to death when they were quite young.

Internet, Social Media Are Important part of Young Filipinos' Life-Survey Shows
When Mark Zuckerberg and his friends first toyed with the idea of Facebook in 2004, young people
today were just kids. Now, these kids comprised the 15-24 age group and appear to be the biggest consumers of
information technology developed by young people their age a decade ago. This is one of the findings released
today by the Demographic Research and Development Foundation (DRDF) and the University of the
Philippines
Population Institute (UPPI).
The data is based on the latest round of survey on young adults in the Philippines. The Young Adult
Fertility and Sexuality (YAFS) Study is a national survey of adolescents and young adults and was first
conducted in 1982.
Dr. Grace Cruz, the main author of the study on media use and youth lifestyle, noted how media
consumption of young adults had shifted through the years. "Young people's consumption of traditional forms
of mass media, especially of newspapers, has been low and this declined further in 2013. This however, does
not necessarily mean that they read less. It could be that they get their news online now."
In 2013, 6 in 10 of young people in this age range are regular internet users, more than half have social
network and email account and 78 percent have mobile phones. On average, they spend 6 hours a week online,
some logging in as much as 35 hours of internet use. Females, the younger youth, and those from economically
better off regions show highersocial media consumption than males, older youth, and those coming from poorer
regions.
This pattern of internet and information technology use translates on how they build relationships. One
in three young people for instance said that they have friends whom they only met online, while 25 percent have
friends whom they met through text and have not seen personally.

PH Planned to Produce Nuclear Weapon-Enrile
by Ben R. Rosario
Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile yesterday disclosed for the first time that production of a
nuclear weapon for the Philippines was among the objectives of the construction of the now mothballed Bataan
Nuclear Plant (BNPP).
In a news forum in Quezon City, Enrile revealed about the preparation for a weapon of mass destruction
planned during the administration of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
"By the way, if we continued with that power plant and we did not tinker with it, today, China will not
challenge us even if we are a small nation," said Enrile, who served as the defense chief during the Marcos
regime.
"That was intended to pare us to have nuclear weapons," the opposition stalwart said.
The country, which is now the object of alleged bullying tactics of the neighboring China, has lost its
chance to produce its own nuclear weapon because the BNPP was mothballed even though government had
fully paid its foreign loan to build it.
