Debate

Useful language to discuss ideas,opinions

and facts
Emma and Tom are going to have a debate
in class on ‘’School uniforms.Should they be compulsory?’’
Teacher: Hi,class. As you know, this week we will be having some class debates. The topic for today’s debate is ‘’School uniforms. Should they be compulsory?
We’ll start with Emma, who is going to be in favour of this idea. Then, Tom is going to voice his thoughts on this to express why he is against this idea.

Emma: I would like to start my speech by raising a question to you. Have you ever watched series such as ‘’Elite’’ or ‘’Sex Education’’ on Netflix? Don’t you think they wear really cool
clothes?

Admittedly, not only are they cool but also extremely useful. Just think of all the problems that not having a uniform poses for all of us.

Firstly, once you wake up, and you are still drowsy, you choose the garments that you think fittest, and to do that you spend a great deal of time that could be invested on more
practical activities.

Secondly, in order to have a broad selection of clothes, you must spend lots of money in it. Having 3 full uniform sets could help you to reduce drastically the amount of money you
spend on clothes.

Last but not least, uniforms are key to make everyone equal, no matter your race, age, family background or economic situation, minimizing the occurrence of bullying at school.

Tom: Emma has pointed out some of the benefits that wearing a uniform may have, highlighting its practicality. I can agree up to a certain extent, however, it’s proven that, even though
my opponent has tried to convince otherwise, uniforms don’t reduce the occurrence of bullying. To exemplify this, I will bring up last year’s bullying incident at a famous private high
school. All the people involved had similar background, race and economic situation and yet they harassed a classmate, because bullying does not stem from outfits.

I firmly believe that our clothes play a pivotal role in our lives, it helps us to express our individuality, our preferences, etc. Should we deprive people from this right? Statistics show
that only 10% percent of bullying cases happen due to outfits.

To put it briefly, in my viewpoint, people who claim that wearing uniforms would reduce bullying cannot see the bigger picture and are completely delusional.
Teacher: Now you can counter-attack some of your classmate’s opinion. You’ve got 1 minute to do that. Emma you start, given that Tom has just finished his speech.

Emma: First and foremost, I have never said that bullying would disappear if we passed a rule that obliged students to wear uniforms, nobody is innocent enough to believe that. What I was
trying to convey is that, if we can reduce the odds of bullying at high schools, isn’t it worth a shot?

When you mention that clothes express our individuality, you are partially right, but that isn’t entirely true. Just take a look at an ordinary highschool and you will see that most of male
teenagers wear the same black clothes, the same brands and have very alike haircuts. Are not they wearing a uniform even if they are trying to express their individuality? How can you make
us believe that they are trying to be different from the rest by being the exact same image of everyone else?

Apart from that, people can express their individuality not just with their clothes, but their accesories, their haircut or their own personality. The best solution I propose consists on passing
uniforms a compulsory rule for all the students, but giving them some days, like once or twice a month, when students are given the chance to wear casual clothes, as it happens at some
companies. We should try to make everyone undestand that going to school is our main occupation and we should take it seriously, as we are being trained to be good workers one day. The
faster we learn this, the sooner we’ll adapt to this changing world.

Tom: It’s true that high school prepares you for real life, but I think you are ignoring the fact that we are dealing with minors and they should not have the same obligations as adults. I
cannot see eye to eye with the ‘’solution’’ that my classmate proposes.

Teenagers, are inherently rebellious, and adding more and more rules to them, even though they must know that they are important, would only make them just grow tired of them. We must not
disregard that we are talking about human beings rather than machines. I cannot agree with a future like that one. I firmly believe that education should make us appreciate our differences
and learn to respect that everyone should be entitled to choose to do whatever they want.

Teacher: Now you have the chance to vote for the winner of the debate. Raise the green card if you think that the person who has been in favour of today’s topic has won the debate, or raise the
red card if you think that the person against the motion has done it better.
