In relation to your programme at the University of Sunderland, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of some important
information about your student visa. Please note that links and information were correct as of June 2024. For the most up-to-date visa
information, please check the Home Office website here.
You must provide the University with full details of your immigration history; this includes any study that you have already undertaken in
the UK. You can contact our Immigration Compliance team via the chat function within CAS Shield. Should you require any assistance
accessing CAS Shield please contact immigrationcompliance@sunderland.ac.uk.
Please note if your programme requires an ATAS certificate you will need to include this in your Student Route visa application.
There are several different ways of showing the financial evidence required in support of your application. It is crucial that you check that
your financial evidence meets the UK Visas and Immigration requirements outlined at https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/Information--
Advice/Visas-and-Immigration/Student-route-eligibility-and-requirements.
Ensure that your funds are held, in an active account for 28 consecutive days before making your application. UKVI often contacts the
financial institution to ensure the funds are genuinely held and can be verified. Your bank statement must not be older than 30 days at the
date of your visa application. If required as part of our Pre-CAS checks the Immigration Compliance Team will ensure your financial
evidence meets UKVI Requirements.
Funding required
You will need to show the outstanding balance for tuition fees that is shown on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). We
strongly recommend that you pay your tuition fees in full before the CAS is produced, to ensure your CAS statement is as accurate as
possible.
In addition to tuition fees the UKVI also require students to show evidence of maintenance funds, you will need to provide a bank
statement proving availability of:
£1,136 per month to cover living costs for each month of your programme up to a maximum of nine months - £10,224 for
Sunderland students, plus any tuition fees you still owe. For visa applications submitted after 2nd January 2025.
If you are providing a bank statement with a currency that is not in £ (GBP), the University of Sunderland advises you to add at least £250
to the minimum maintenance funds stated above. This is to help you avoid any problems should the currency exchange rate change.
Please use the Oanda currency converter to ensure you have the correct amount of money in your bank account -
https://www.oanda.com/currency-converter.
We strongly recommend you keep the funding you show in your account until after you have received your visa.
You will likely need to pay a healthcare surcharge called the immigration health surcharge (or IHS) as part of your immigration
application. The payment will go directly into the National Health Service (NHS), and applicants will be entitled to receive the same cover
as a permanent UK resident. You can start using the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK when you’ve (i) paid the healthcare
surcharge (or are exempt from paying it), and (ii) your visa or immigration application is granted.
New students applying for Student Visa entry clearance visas can use the start and end dates shown on their Certificate of Acceptance
(CAS) to calculate how much the charge will be. The cost is based on the length of the visa you are applying for.
The Immigration Health Surcharge is currently £776 per year per person for the Student Visa Route. For further information or to identify
how much you will need to pay please follow this link - Pay for UK healthcare as part of your immigration application: How much you have
to pay - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
The Student Visa application form will direct you to the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) portal where you can pay the required
charge.
I hope that this information is helpful to you, and I wish you all the best for your studies at the University of Sunderland.
