Advantages
It is inexpensive.

Disadvantages
Any traces of carbon left in the weld will weaken it. If flame distance is not proper it can burn through the metal instead of welding it.

Requires very little specialized equipment.

Advantages
Process is Automated.

Disadvantages
Cannot be used for joining two metals. Only used for cladding.

Since a strip is used, every pass covers more area than a wire cladding would.

Advantages
Process is automated and very fast. Weld requires no filler metal and is economical.

Disadvantages
High initial cost of equipment

Lower tensile and fatigue strength.

Advantages

Disadvantages

Heat required for welding is obtained from chemical reaction and hence no electricity is required.

Process is applicable only to ferrous metal parts.

Process can be carried out where sophisticated equipment and power supply cannot be obtained.

Process consumes more time.

Advantages

Disadvantages

Narrow Heat Affected zone.

High equipment cost and that of vacuum chamber. Size of work is limited due to requirement of vacuum.

Can be used to weld in applications where the reverse side cannot be welded.

Rapid solidification can cause cracks in some metals and Xrays are produced during the process which can be dangerous.

Advantages

Disadvantages

Can be fully automated.

Ion beam welding can cause surface properties of metal near weld to be affected.

High equipment and operation cost. -

Advantages

Disadvantages

Consistent weld quality.

Xenon flash tube heats up quickly and hence process cannot be used continuously for long time periods.

Quality of weld comparable to that of conventional methods.

Life of xenon flash is very short.
