Polygons Final PPT Genyo

This document defines polygons and discusses their properties. It begins by explaining that a polygon is a closed plane shape with 3 or more straight sides. The smallest number of sides is 3, and there is no largest number. It then discusses various terms used to describe polygons like vertices, diagonals, consecutive sides. It classifies polygons based on the number of sides like triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons. The document also covers formulas for calculating the sum of interior and exterior angles. It distinguishes between convex and concave polygons. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating angle measures and classifying polygon types.

What does the word polygon mean?

What is the smallest number of

sides a polygon can have?
What is the largest number of
sides a polygon can have?

A polygon is a closed plane figure with 3 or more sides (all

straight lines, no curves).

A figure is a polygon if and only

if
It is formed by 3 or more
segments.
Each side intersects exactly
two other sides, one at each
endpoint.

Identifying Polygons
State whether the figure is
a polygon. If it is not,
explain why.
Not D has a side that
isnt a segment its an
arc.
Not E because two of the
sides intersect only one
other side.
Not F because some of its
sides intersect more than
two sides/

Classifying Polygons
Polygons with 3 sides Triangles
Polygons with 4 sides Quadrilaterals
Polygons with 5 sides.. Pentagons
But wait we have more polygons
Polygons with 6 sides Hexagons
Polygons with 7 sides Heptagons
Polygons with 8 sides Octagons
But still we have more polygons
Polygons with 9 sides Nonagons
Polygons with 10 sides Decagons
Polygons with 11 sides Undecagons/ Hendecagon
Polygons with 12 sides Dodecagons
And now we have our polygons

Important Terms
A VERTEX is
the point of
intersection of
two sides

A segment whose
endpoints are two
nonconsecutive
vertices is called
a DIAGONAL.

CONSECUTIVE
VERTICES are two
endpoints of any side.

D
Sides that share a vertex are called
CONSECUTIVE SIDES.

More Important Terms

EQUILATERAL - All sides are congruent
EQUIANGULAR - All angles are congruent
REGULAR - All sides and angles are congruent

Polygons are named by listing its

vertices consecutively.

Polygons can be CONCAVE or CONVEX

CONCAVE

CONVEX

Two Types of Polygons

Convex all vertices point

outward
Concave at least one vertex
points inward towards the
center of the polygon (The side
looks like it caved in)

Convex or concave?
Convex if no line that
contains a side of the
polygon contains a point
in the interior of the
polygon.
Concave or non-convex if
a line does contain a side
of the polygon containing
a point on the interior of
the polygon.
See how this crosses
a point on the inside?
Concave.

See how it doesnt go on the

Inside-- convex
