Outline
• Energy is an integral component of a modern economy, being
required as continuous input to all industrial processes.
The availability is not infinite however. Energy crisis
globally, as well as high cost of fuels resulted in more
activities to conserve energy to maximum extent.

• The total energy consumption of the industrial sectors of

developed countries contributes to around 30–40 % of total
energy demands.
• In countries like Ethiopia, where electrical energy resources are scarce

and production of electricity is very costly, energy

conservation studies are of great importance.

has proved to be an effective and concrete

method to achieve rapid improvements in energy efficiency and
conservation in buildings and industrial processes.
 survey, inspection and analysis of energy flows for
energy conservation in an industry to reduce the
amount of energy input into the system without
negatively affecting the output.
 involves the classification of the energy sources and their
contribution in running the factory.
 provides a structural review of how energy is being
purchased, managed and used with the aim of identifying
opportunities for energy cost saving through improved
services.
• Is using energy more efficiently, either through change of
behavior, improved management or through the
introduction of new technology without compromising the
quality.
• Strategies (examples):
• replace old motors with new energy efficient motors;
• replace oversized motors;
• Improve Power supply quality;
• power factor improvements;
• replace fluorescent magnetic ballasts with electronic ones;
• reduce lighting levels when this will not reduce manufacturing production or
quality. Turn off lights when not needed;
• resizing of conductors.
 individual consumer/ industry: Saving in energy cost
 Grid: Capacity increase without capital investment
 Society: Deceleration in depleting natural resources
for the betterment of next generation.
General Objective
• to study a plant or facility to determine how and where
energy is used and to identify methods for energy savings.
Specific Objectives
• To determine productive and nonproductive electrical energy usage
• To identify inefficient use or operation of electrical energy
• To identify possibility of electrical energy savings throughout the
factories
• To indicate achievable and feasible electrical energy saving measures
Addis Pharmaceutical Factory (APF)
• The largest pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Ethiopia, is located in Adigrat,
Tigray Region.
• Opened in 1992, the plant has an annual production capacity of 1.2 billion tablets, 19
billion ampoules, 10 million vials, 500,000 capsules, 4 million ointment tubes and 9.6
million bottles of syrup.
• The plant was constructed and equipped with high tech production facilities and in
2009 the company acquired a second factory located at Akaki on the outskirts of
Addis Ababa which is dedicated for the manufacturing of large volumes Parenterlas.
• APF manufactures more than 91 high quality products of different therapeutic
categories including antibiotics, gastro-intestinal drugs, central nervous system drugs,
cardiovascular drugs, anti-diabetic agents, antihistamines, antehelmitics, analgesics,
antiprotozoals, respiratory drugs, dermatological preparations, minerals and vitamins as
well as large volumes of Parentals. The company has more than nine production lines
and fully equipped laboratories.
•Literature Review: a review of existing world-wide available
technologies for energy saving schemes.
•Data and Information Gathering: Manufacturers data; company’s
records regarding Electricity Power Bills, Important parameters including power rating
and operation time of energy consuming equipment/machinery; production figure;
peak and off peak tariff usage behaviour; and power factor
• Data Analysis: includes calculations of effective output of the
machines & comparing with original specifications.
• Identifying Achievable Energy Saving Opportunities with cost
benefit analysis: potential workable implementation schemes for
energy saving at the factories under consideration are developed and
evaluated on both performance and cost-effectiveness basis.
 The expected output of the research is identified achievable energy
saving opportunities with their cost-benefit analysis.

 We expect the research to help the respective factory managements

understand the importance of energy auditing for efficient use of energy.
The research will also enhance knowledge and awareness of energy
conservation among all workers of the factories.

 Moreover, the study will encourage these and other factories to have an
energy conservation department responsible for managing energy loss
reducing specific energy consumption.
