INTRODUCTION
Banaras Hindu University (BHU), formerly Central Hindu
College, is a public central university located in Varanasi, Uttar
Pradesh. It was established in 1916 by Madan Mohan Malaviya
and Annie Besant.[2] With over 30,000 students residing in
campus, it claims the title of largest residential university in
Asia.
BHU is organised into 6 institutes and 14 faculties (streams)
and about 140 departments.[7][8] As of 2017, the total student
enrollment at the university is 27,359[9] coming from 48
countries.[10] It has over 75 hostels for resident students.

Centre of Food Science and Technology
The Centre of Food Science & Technology (CFST) is an
inter-disciplinary research centre with collaboration
between the Institute of Agricultural Sciences and the
Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) focusing on food
processing technology.
Centre of Food Science and Technology (BHU)


Centre of Food Science and Technology was established in 2008. The Centre
has one pilot plant comprising five units like - Milk Processing, Fruits &
Vegetable Processing, Niro Spray Dryer, Retort Machine and packaging. The
centre has also latest Laboratories having all types of equipments to analyze the
quality attributes of food products.
The major research areas of Centre are viz Dairy Technology, Functional and
nutraceutical technology, fermentation technology, instant foods, fruit candy,
coarse cereals in bread and cookies production and agricultural waste
management to produce enzymes and metabolites. The centre has established
the ICAR sponsored Centre of Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT) in Food
processing. The centre has seven MoU with national and international academic
institution and food Industries like ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute,
Indian Institute of packaging, DSM, etc. The centre has opened the Association
of Food Scientist and Technologists (India) –Varanasi chapter in January, 2017.

To develop human resource to serve the growing demands


of food processing industries in India.
To develop world class academic and research
programmes in the area of Food Science relevant to the
needs of the country.
To establish linkages with national and international
organizations to promote synergy in education and
research in Food Science.

BHU Postgraduate Entrance Tests (PET) is conducted for
admissions to various postgraduate courses like L.L.M,
M.A Mass Communication, M.Com, M.Sc is offered by
the university. The admissions to the mentioned above
courses will be done based on the marks secured in BHU
PET 2019. The merit list of BHU PET 2019, availability
of seats and number of applicants will play a major role in
the admission process. Also, candidates must be aware
that courses under BHU PET are divided into categories
such as ‘General’, ‘Professional’, ‘Special’ and
‘Vocational Courses’.
There are certain courses which are also offered in Rajiv Gandhi South Campus,
Barkachha, (RGSC) Mirzapur, Mahila Mahavidyalaya, BHU (MMV) and the
Colleges admitted to the Privileges of the University in the city namely, Vasant
Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Kamachha (VKM); Arya Mahila Post Graduate College,
Chetganj (AMPGC); DAV Post Graduate College, Ausanganj (DAVPGC) and
Vasanta College for Women, Rajghat (VCW).

(executive Wojtala, Executive Director at the IFPTI. Previously, he was Deputy
Director of the Food & Dairy Division with the Michigan Department of
Agriculture where he managed the food protection programs in the state of
Michigan (oversight of division employees and accreditation of 45 local public
health programs). He was also responsible for legislative interaction and led
efforts for the major amending and reenactment of the state food law. Mr.
Wojtala is the Past-President of the Association of Food and Drug Officials
(AFDO). Prior to government service, he worked as a microbiologist at Difco
Laboratories in Detroit. He is a long standing member of the Institute of Food
Technologists and is also a current lead instructor with the National Center for
Biomedical Research and Training, Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education at
Louisiana State University. Mr. Wojtala received the FDA Commissioner’s
Special Citation for his role in investigating an outbreak of Hepatitis A among
school children from the consumption of strawberries and also for managing the
response to the Power Blackout of 2003 that occurred in the N.E. United States.
Mr. Wojtala holds a degree in Microbiology from Eastern Michigan University
and graduate work in Food Science at Wayne State University.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of


India
Introduction:
 FSSAI is an autonomous body established under
the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of
India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food
Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which is a consolidating
statute related to food safety and regulation in India. FSSAI
is responsible for protecting and promoting public health
through the regulation and supervision of food safety.
The FSSAI has its headquarters at New Delhi. The authority also has 6 regional
offices located in Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin, and Chennai. 14
referral laboratories notified by FSSAI, 72 State/UT laboratories located throughout
India and 112 laboratories are NABL accredited private laboratories notified by
FSSAI.
FSSAI was established by Former Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani
Ramadoss,Government of India on 5 August 2011 under Food Safety and Standards
Act, 2006 which was operationalized in year 2006. The FSSAI consists of a
chairperson & 22 members.
The FSSAI is responsible for setting standards for food so that there is
one body to deal with and no confusion in the minds of consumers,
traders, manufacturers, and investors.
 Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India is the
Administrative Ministry of Food Safety and Standards Authority of
India. The following are the statutory powers that the FSS Act, 2006
gives to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI):-
 Framing of regulations to lay down food safety standards
 Laying down guidelines for accreditation of laboratories for food
testing
 Providing scientific advice and technical support to the Central
Government
 Contributing to the development of international technical standards in
food
 Collecting and collating data regarding food consumption,
contamination, emerging risks etc.
 Disseminating information and promoting awareness about food safety
and nutrition in India
The main aim of FSSAI is to:
 Lay down science-based standards for articles of food
 To regulate manufacture, storage, distribution, import and sale of
food
 To facilitate safety of food

for food safety. The FSS Act took 7 older acts into one umbrella.
