DC Motor

A DC motor converts direct current into mechanical energy. The first electric motors were simple electrostatic devices described in the 1740s. A DC motor consists of a yoke, stator, rotor, commutator, and brushes. The commutator connects the coils to the DC power source and reverses the direction of current in the coils to keep turning the rotor. The speed of a DC motor can be controlled by changing the voltage or current according to the motor type. DC motors are used in various applications like lathe machines, pumps, fans, conveyors, and more where controlled speed or higher starting torque is required.

DC Motor Definition: A DC motor is any of a class of rotary electrical machines

that converts direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy.

History: The first electric motors were simple electrostatic devices described in
experiments by Scottish monk Andrew Gordon and American experimenter
Benjamin Franklin in 1740s.

Types of DC motor:

DC shunt motor DC series motor DC compound motor

A DC motor consist of following parts:
1.Yoke: the external cover of motor
2.Stator: the segment where N & S poles are placed
3.Roter: coil winding & shaft
4.Commutator: connector between brushes & coils
5.brushes: made of carbon & deliver the current to coil

The speed control of the DC motor can be expressed by the relation
N=Kn(Eb/∮)
Where Eb = V –IaRa for dc shunt motor
Eb= V – la( Ra + Rf) for series motor

Various applications of DC shunt motor are in Lathe
Machines,CentrifugalPumps,Fans,Blowers,Conveyors,Lifts,WeavingMachine,Spinningmachines,etc.The compound motors are
used where higher starting torque and fairly constant speed is required.
Nowadays motor is a useful machines and technology always improve machines. So this is the application of a DC motor.
