Selection of Turbine

This document discusses the selection of turbines based on head and specific speed. It begins by defining a turbine as a device that extracts energy from a fluid. Turbines are selected to match the specific operating conditions and maximize efficiency. Turbines can be classified based on head into high, medium, and low head turbines. The selection of a turbine depends on the available head - high head applications use low specific speed impulse turbines, while low head uses high specific speed propeller turbines. Specific speed can be varied for a given head and power by changing the rotational speed of the runner.

Turbine

“Turbo” or “turbines” is Latin in origin and implies that which spins or whirls
around.

Turbine is a device which extracts energy from a fluid.

Energy is transferred to or from a continuously flowing fluid by the dynamic

action of the moving blades or rotors.
Turbine Design
Selection of Turbine

The turbine is always selected to match the specific conditions under which it
has to operate and attain the maximum possible efficiency.

Head flow/speed.

For selection of suitable turbine, the characteristics features of common turbines

based on experience are given in further slides.
Types of Turbine
on basis of head
Accordingly to head and quantity of
water available, the turbines can be
classified into:

1) High head turbines

2) Medium head turbines
3) Low head turbines
Classification and selection of turbine based on head
Choice of Turbine
Depends on available head.

Specific speed:

For high head- low specific speed to

impulse turbines are required.

For low speed- High speed eg Propeller.

Classification and selection of speed turbine based on head
To vary specific speed
Speed can be vary for given value of head and power through this equation by
changing rotational speed of runner.
Conclusion
Thank you!
