Online Assessment Tools
FOR TEACHERS
1. Google Forms
Process:
Step 1: Set up a new form or quiz
1. Go to forms.google.com.
2. Click Blank .
3. A new form will open.
It is a free online tool, that allows you to collect information easily and efficiently.
With Google forms you can create surveys in few minutes to ask your clients or collaborators
information about your products or service.
To start using this tool, you only need a Google account, the same one you need to access Gmail,
YouTube or Google Drive.
The interface is very easy to use. Any user with an average Internet knowledge can create forms
using this tool.
The assistant is simple to use. The What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get interface makes it easy to
drag and drop form elements and organize them based on actions or events.
At the design level it is possible to choose between a palette of colors, as well as own images as a
background.
Google forms stores the feedback received so we can analyze it in detail.
The forms are integrated with Google spreadsheets therefore we can access to a spreadsheet
view of the collected data.
The general configuration of forms or surveys allows you to collect the recipient’s email
address and limit the answers.
For advanced users, the type of data that can be inserted into a field can be customized
using regular expressions. This helps customize the form even more.
Google forms allows us to see how the survey will look before sending it over to the
recipients.
We can send the form by email, integrate it into our website or send the link via social
networks or any other means.
With this tool, you can get unlimited questions and answers at no cost, while other survey
tools require a payment depending on the number of questions and recipients.
Disadvantages of using Google forms
The design customization is very limited. Advanced users can change the design to use the
tool with a greater number of purposes.
There are some security concerns. The user has to create a good password and protects it to
increase the level of security.
There are certain limitations regarding the capabilities of this tool. It accepts texts up to 500
Kb; images up to 2 Mb; and for spreadsheets the limit is 256 cells or 40 sheets.
2.Kahoot!
Playing a kahoot is as simple as 1-2-3
2.Find a game to play – click Discover on the top navigation bar to search from our library of millions, or choose a game from one of our
collections.
3.Click Play.
5.The game lobby launches, displaying a unique game PIN, for all players to see.
6.Players use their own devices, e.g. a phone, to join the game via kahoot.it or the Kahoot! app, by entering the PIN and their nickname.
7. Once all players are in the game lobby, click Start.
8. Players answer the questions they see on the shared screen with their devices. Each
answer option on the shared screen is inside a box with a specific color and shape that
matches the boxes displayed on the players’ screen.
10. At the end of the game, the winner’s nickname appears on the shared screen, and
players see their final place on their device.
Advantages of Kahoot
User Friendly, Can start the quiz by using a video to engage the students. More engaging for low ability
students. Competitive.
Student engagement with Kahoot is very high.
Students enjoy playing Kahoot because it is visual, fast paced, and different from the average day to day
quizzes.
Due to high student engagement, teachers are able to measure understanding of the materials that were
covered more accurately through the quizzes and surveys.
Kahoot gives teachers the ability to perform a formative assessment of the whole class at one time without
putting students on the spot.
Another advantage of Kahoot is that if you do not have time to create a Kahoot, there are many that are
shared by other teachers that can be chosen from. The ease of use of the Kahoot website and application
makes it something that even the most technologically illiterate teacher and students can master
Kahoot is a great way to integrate technology into any classroom, from Science and Math to History and
English.
Disadvantages of Kahoot
Cannot put questions in order. Students have to have an internet connection and a
smartphone/tablet. The picture comes a bit after the question.
The major disadvantage that I find with Kahoot is that it is hard to track student progress. Students have
usernames that either the teacher can create or they can create (teacher can kick the student out of the game
if they create an inappropriate username) and during the game points are tallied based on how fast and how
accurate they answers are given. In order to track student progress the teacher would have to breakdown
usernames and attach them to student names and then record the number of answers each student got right
in every Kahoot that was played. This would be tedious at best.
3. Socrative
Process:
1. Start off by logging into Socrative and creating your own individual account.
2. On Your Dashboard, You will see Four Different Icons: START A QUIZ, QUICK QUESTION, SPACE
RACE, EXIT TICKET
START A QUIZ -This format allows you to create a multiple choice assessment for the class.
QUICK QUESTION - When students enter the class, you can have them answer a short
answer pre assessment. This can be use to start the class off immediatly on your content for the day
SPACE RACE -This Icon allows your class to compete in group against one another . It
can be used as a test prep the day before a final.
EXIT TICKET -After the end of the day’s lesson, have the class take a quick refresher of the day’s content.
3. Click on Create Quiz under the Manage Quizzes Icon on the Dashboard
4. The next page will ask you to create a name for your quiz. You can decide to make it either a short
answer, multiple choice, or true or false.
5. If you wish to align your quiz with a
Common Core Standard, check the box
marked “Align entire quiz with Standard”. The
menu will scroll down and from there you can
make you decision regarding Subject, Core,
Class/Grade, and Standard.
The greatest disadvantage of Socrative is the size limit on the program. Only one
quiz can be opened at a time, and only 50 users may complete the quiz in each
opening. These limits would make it challenging to assign the quiz for homework
or to have quizzes simultaneously going in different subject areas. Teachers might
be able to get around these limits by setting up multiple accounts with different
email addresses, but juggling the different log-ins would be a hassle.
4. Plickers
Process:
1.Adding a class
A. Sign In
B. Go to Classes
C. Here you will see a Demo Class, and any classes already added to your account, and a tab that says “Add new class”
Disadvantages
Limited to 63 users
Limited question types (MCQs, T/F)
Not integrated with powerpoint
Need wifi access
Need sufficient lighting to enable the camera to pick up images
5.Padlet
Process:
Step 1: Go to padlet.com and create an account. Use either your Iowa State University email
and/or another account that is associated with your name.
Being able to access free software for a teacher is a major bonus, especially with a tool like
Padlet because all students can contribute to the wall and share their ideas.
Padlet is also mobile, allowing students to use it on their smartphones if a classroom isn't
Also, there are different privacy settings, which is important when dealing with students
Students don't need to create a username or put in personal information unless the teacher asks
them to.
A teacher just needs to create their own username, build a wall, then share the link to the
A primary concern with a tool like Padlet is that a teacher has no control of what students
will type. A teacher can tell them to be appropriate and use the tool in an ethical way, but
some may go against this rule. Also, it can
add as a distraction to learning with students taking up too much time making sure what
they type is correct.
