Problem No. 13 (Punching Shear Stress) What Force P Is Required To Punch A In. Hole On A In. Thick Plate If The Ultimate Shear Strength On The Plate Is 42000 Psi?

A 3/4 inch thick steel plate has an ultimate shear strength of 42,000 psi. To punch a 1 inch hole in the plate would require a force of 24.74 kips. A 270mm diameter brass liner with a coefficient of linear expansion of 1.9x10-5/°C currently at 170°C needs to be heated to 406.8635°C to increase its diameter by 2mm.

• Problem No.

13 (PUNCHING  SHEAR STRESS)

What force P is required to punch a in. hole on a in. thick
plate if the ultimate shear strength on the plate is 42000 psi?
•  Solution

Su =
42000

P = 24.74 kips
• Problem No. 14 (THERMAL ELONGATION)
A brass liner is 270mm diameter when the temperature is
17⁰C. If the coefficient of linear expansion of the brass is
1.9×10-5/ ⁰C, find the temperature to which the liner should be
heated in order to increase the diameter by 2mm.
• Solution:
∆D = k do (T2 – T1)
2mm = (1.9×10-5/ ⁰C) (270mm) (T2 – 17)

T2 = 406.8635 ⁰C
