Solid Waste Management
Solid Waste Management
Municipal authorities shall establish and maintain storage facilities in such a manner as they
do not create unhygienic and insanitary conditions around it.
Storage facilities shall be created and established by taking into account quantities of waste
generation in a given and the population densities.
Storage facilities to be set up by municipal authorities or any other agency shall be so designed
that wastes stored are not exposed to open atmosphere and shall be aesthetically acceptable
and user friendly.
Storage facilities or bins shall have easy to operate design for handling, transfer and
transportation of waste. Bins for storage of biodegradable wastes shall be painted green, those
for storage of recyclable wastes shall be printed white and those for storage of other wastes
shall be printed black.
Manual handling of waste shall be prohibited. If unavoidable due to constraints, manual
handling shall be carried out under proper precaution with due care for safety of workers.
METHOD OF COLLECTION OF SOLID
WASTES
Method of collection of solid wastes:
A) House to house collection
i) Curb system
ii) Alley service
iii) Set out service
iv) Set out set back service
v) Back yard service
B) Storage bin system
PRESENT SCENARIO COLLECTION OF
MSW
In a present scenario it has been observed that citizens have not been educated to keep domestic, trade and individual bins
for storage of waste and hence no bins are placed.
In most of situations domestic wastes as well as from, shop offices, hospital, hotels etc. is disposed off on open plot and
drains which results in clogging of drains and pollution of water.
At some site the solid waste is burnt directly on the disposed site. Hence there is no practice of storing the waste at source.
Exchanging waste
The waste product comes out from process becomes a raw material for other process. Thus waste can be reduced up
to certain extent.
Zero waste
︎Try to eliminate waste at source and at all points down the supply chain.
COLLECTION OF SOLID WASTE
To keep the environment clean and healthy, the solid waste should be removed as early as possible.
The frequency of collection mainly depends upon, quantity of solid waste generated, size of storage facilities,
seasons and funds available.
In order to prevent the start of odour and fly breeding problems, solid waste must be collected early possible.
Thus to collect solid waste properly and systematically following points should be kept in mind.
1. Collection routes must be as short as possible, to economies the solid waste collection.
2. The training of workers and maintenance of equipment is necessary for proper and collection of the solid waste.
3. The collection must ne daily in commercial areas and twice in a week in residential areas.
Organizing house to house collection of municipal solid waste through any of the methods like community bin collection ( central bin ), house to house collection,
collection on regular pre-informed timings and scheduling by using bell ringing vehicles.
Devising collection of waste from slums and squatter areas or localities including hotels, restaurants, office complexes and commercial areas.
waste from slaughter houses, meat and fish markets, fruits and vegetables markets which are biodegradable in nature, shall be managed to make use of such wastes.
Bio -medical waste and industrial wastes shall not be mixed with municipal solid waste and such wastes shall follow the rules separately specified for the purpose.
Collected waste from residential and other areas shall be transferred to community bin by hand-driven containerized carts or other small vehicles.
Horticultural and construction or demolition waste or debris shall be separately collected and disposed off following proper norms. Similarly, wastes generated at
diaries shall be regulated in according with the state laws.
Stray animals shall not be allowed to move around waste storage facilities or at any other place in the city or town and shall be managed in accordance with the state
laws.
2. The municipal authority shall notify waste collection schedule and the likely method to be adopted for public benefit in city or town
3. If shall be the responsibility of generator of wastes to avoid notified and insure delivery of wastes in accordance with the collection and segregation system to be
notified by the municipal authority.
Factors affecting the collection of dry refuse
1) Location of dustbins
2) Collection frequency
3) Population density
5) Time of collection
6) Collection routes
7) Cost of collection
Sorting at source
Sorting helps in mixing of biodegradable and non biodegradable waste together. In this process waste are
segregated and stored in different containers.
Which helps in giving approximate treatment to waste which reduces the time and cost of treatment.
STORAGE METHODS OF GARDEN WASTE
AND CONSTRUCTION DEMOLITION WASTE
1)Private garden should as far as possible compost all plants on sites. Where it is not possible to dispose of garden waste within the premises and the
waste is required to be disposed of outside the premise, it shall be stored in large bags or bins on site and transferred into a municipal waste.
2)Waste should be stored in the premises and kept ready for handling over to the municipal authority.
3) Garden waste and fallen leaves from avenue trees within large public parks and garden should be composed to the extend possible. If such waste
has disposed of, large containers may be kept, which match with the municipal transportation system for transportation of such waste.
1. Construction waste shall be stored only within the premises of building or in container storage facility is not available on premises, such waste
producers shall take prior permissible of local authority as may be applicable for temporary storage of such waste, may stored such waste in such a
way that it does not hamper the traffic, the waste does not get spread on the road and does not block the surface drains or water drains.
2. Provide container on rent for storage and transportation of construction and demolition waste.
3. Suitable sites may be identified in varies parts of a city and people notified the deposit qualities of construction and demolition wastes.
TOOLS AND EQUIPTMENTS
1) Litter bin
2) Hand carts
3) Pedal tricycles
4) Movable bin
5) Stationary bin
6) Broom
7) Shovels
It is usually made up of metal or plastic. There is also called as dustbins. the dustbins usually are of 3 types :
The bins are common for both accomposable and non decomposable waste.
The normal capacity of bin for household collection should be 240 liters.
2. Hand carts
These are suitable for collection of waste in congested and narrow streets.
Worker can push the cart easily and haul the solid waste to either movable or fixed bins.
The usual size of bin is about 0.4 m. and its capacity is 200kg of MSW.
3. Pedal tricycles
Pedal tricycles are also used for transfer of waste. These are made up of metal. A box is made or sometimes
it is provided with several bins for collection of waste.
Pedal tricycle can loads up to 1.5 m^3 . Pedal tricycle is efficient and produces no negative impact on
environment.
4. Movable bin
In this containers are taken to disposal site and they were emptied their and returned back to transfer
station. The container of large size are used for the purpose.
This system is flexible depending upon amount and type of waste to be transported. Container of different
size and shapes can be used.
5. Stationary bin
In this system bins are not transported from their location but are emptied into a container on the truck.
Depending upon size of waste and quantity of waste bin size is decided. The collection procedures is carried
out mechanically or manually.
For mechanical collection driver and one person is required for loading waste but in manually loaded system
two additional labourers are required for loading the waste.
6. Broom
Brooms are the excellent tools for collecting dust and sand as well as sweeping leaves form unpaved surface
normally two types of brooms are used to collect waste one is having bunches of short filaments and second
type is that in which bunches of long filaments are bunches into a wooden section.
The broom made up of long filaments helps to take long strokes without exerting high pressure ground.
While the short filament brooms are used to remove material stick to surface of street one should use different
brooms for gutter and for paved area.
7. Shovels
Normally metal shovels are used to remove material stick to paved areas.
Metal shovels are heavier than plastic shovel but are more durable than plastic shovel.
The large straight blade shovel is used to collect and pick waste.
Mechanical road sweepers are mobile unit use to collect the waste material.
Road sweepers effectively sweeps litter, leaves, small debris etc from roads and pavements.
Mechanical road sweepers varies in size from very small unit to large mechanical sweepers mounted on vehicular
chassis.
