When do we use ‘The First Conditional?
Check the following uses and examples. Pay special attention to the position of ’IF’ in every sentence.

Check the following examples regarding different aspects of life:


• We use it to talk about possibilities in the present or in the future.
If you study medicine, you won’t have too many work options in the future.
• We use it to talk about possible plans, promises, warnings, or for persuading people.
If you work out and eat well, you won’t get sick often.
• We use it to talk about consequences we get depending on specific actions we do.
You will live a balanced life if you have spiritual guidance.

How is the First Conditional structured?
It includes two parts: the condition and the result or vice versa. Check verb tenses on each part.

CONDITION (if clause) RESULT (main clause)

If + subject + Verb (present) comma + subject + will + verb


If you work hard every day, you will achieve your goals in life.
RESULT (main clause) CONDITION (if clause)

Subject + will + verb if + subject + Verb (present)


You will achieve your goals in life if you work hard every day.

Sports
•If you exercise often, your brain will release chemicals called endorphins.
•Your muscles will weaken if you don’t do exercise.

Studies
•If you study new vocabulary every day, you will speak English fluently.

•If you eat healthy regularly, you won’t see the doctor so often.
•You will get sick if you smoke and drink alcohol.
