BRIEF HISTORY
ROCOCO PAINTING

- originated in early 18th century Paris

-  is characterized by soft colors and curvy lines, and depicts scenes of love, nature, amorous encounters, light-hearted entertainment, and
youth
- The word “rococo” derives from rocaille, which is French for rubble or rock.
- Rocaille refers to the shell-work in garden grottoes and is used as a descriptive word for the serpentine patterns seen in the Decorative
Arts of the Rococo period.
- After the death of Louis XIV, the French court moved from Versailles back to their old Parisian mansions, redecorating their homes
using softer designs and more modest materials than that of the King’s grand baroque style. Instead of surrounding themselves with precious
metals and rich colors, the French aristocracy now lived in intimate interiors made with stucco adornments, boiserie, and mirrored glass. This
new style is characterized by its asymmetry, graceful curves, elegance, and the delightful new paintings of daily life and courtly love, which
decorated the walls within these spaces.
BRIEF HISTORY

◦ The Rococo movement grew out of the Baroque and began flourishing on the European continent in the 1730s.
◦ It borrowed many design elements of the Baroque, such as ornate interior gilding and intricate detailing, but took the opulence and glam to
extreme levels.
◦ Dumping the high emotions and religious drama of the previous period, the Rococo favored something altogether more sensual, airy, and
whimsical.
◦ The style received harsh criticism and was seen by some to be superficial and of poor taste, especially when compared to neoclassicism;
despite this, it has been praised for its aesthetic qualities.
◦ Rococo artists and architects used a more jocular, florid, and graceful approach to the Baroque. Their style was ornate and used light
colors, asymmetrical designs, curves, and gold.

and enjoying music.

- Boucher’s insistence on a painterly surface and adoption of a high-toned palette favoring blues and pinks was well suited to Rococo
interiors but was the target of critical derision late in his career when the style fell from favor.
