Data Collection of Interview Method

The document discusses different methods for collecting data through interviews. It describes structured interviews, which use standardized questions to gather consistent responses from large samples, as well as semi-structured interviews, which use open-ended questions within common themes to allow for clarification. Unstructured interviews are more casual and flexible, with no strict interview guide. The document also notes the need for interviews when personalized or in-depth data is required, and that WHO recommends six steps for developing an interview guide.

Data collection of interview

method
Interview
 Interviewing involves asking respondents a series of
open-ended questions
 Interviews can generate both standardized
quantifiable data, and more in-depth qualitative data
 However, the complexities of people and the
complexities of communication can create many
opportunities for miscommunication and
misinterpretation

Conducting Interviews
When conducting your interviews you will need
to
 question, prompt, and probe in ways that help you
gather rich data
 actively listen and make sense of what is being
said
 manage the overall process

Needs for interview collection method

• There is a need to attain highly personalized data.

• There are opportunities required for probing.

• A good return rate is important.

• Respondents are not fluent in the native language of the
country, or where they have difficulties with written language.
WHO suggested six steps to devise an
interview guide, which include

 Identify appropriate topics and questions

 Decide on the level of detail
 Draft the questions
 Order the questions
 List any probes or prompts
Types of Interviews

There are many types of interviews, which

include:

• structured interviews,

• semi-structured interviews,

• unstructured interviews,

• other interviews.
Structured

The aim of structured interviewing is usually to gather

data from large samples and to ensure consistency of
response, and is therefore more often associated with
quantitative research.  Structured interviews are what
Cohen et al call ‘frontloaded’.  In other words, as with a
self-completion questionnaire, all the categories and
coding are worked out in advance.
Semi-structured

 This is appropriate may bwhen you know from prior

research (your own, or someone else’s) what the main issues
are, or they e determined by the particular problem you are
investigating.  Open questions, however, give people the
opportunity to talk openly and freely within the themes.  In
this approach there is the assumption that the interviewee
and interviewer will share a common understanding of the
issues being addressed, but the invitations to speak should
be framed in such a way that the interviewee can challenge
the interviewer’s understandings.  This allows for clarifying
 This type of interview is non-directed and is a flexible method. It is
more casual than the aforementioned interviews. There is no need to
follow a
 detailed interview guide. Each interview is different. Interviewees are
encouraged to speak openly, frankly and give as much detail as
possible.
 Usually the interviewer has received virtually little or no training or
coaching about the interview process and has not prepared much. The
interviewers ask questions that respondents would be able to express
their opinions, knowledge and share their experience.
