Arithmetic Average or Mean: BY Vansh Karel Sohum Taparia Anchit Gupta Bhuvas Singh Tomar

This document discusses different types of means (averages) used in statistics. It defines the arithmetic mean as the total value of all items divided by the number of items. It then describes the simple arithmetic mean and weighted arithmetic mean. For calculating the simple arithmetic mean, it outlines the direct method, assumed mean/shortcut method, and step deviation method formulas. It also distinguishes between individual, discrete, and continuous data series for calculating means. Finally, it provides two example questions calculating means using direct, assumed mean, and step deviation methods.

ARITHMETIC AVERAGE

OR MEAN

MEANING OF MEAN
"Arithmetic Mean is the number obtained by dividing the total values of different
items by their number" we use this method in our everyday lite. It is a popular
and most widely used measure
It is the most popular and widely used measure of central tendancy, representing
the entire data by a single value.
KINDS OF MEAN

SIMPLE ARITHMETIC AVERAGE OR MEAN

AND
WEIGHTED ARITHMETIC AVERAGE OR WEIGHTED MEAN
SIMPLE ARITHMETIC AVERAGE
OR MEAN
Simple Arithmetic Mean can be calculated by any of the following
methods :

1)DIRECT METHOD
2)SHORT CUT METHOD(ASSUMED MEAN)
3)STEP DEVIATION METHOD
IRECT METHOD OF MEAN
IS CALCULATED BY THE FOLLOWING FORMULA:

WHERE,

X - BAR = ARITHMETIC MEAN

N = TOTAL NUMBER OF OBSERVATIONS

ΣX = SUM OF ALL OBSERVATIONS

ASSUMED MEAN OR SHORT CUT
METHOD
ASSUMED MEAN CAN BE CLACULATED WITHY THE FOLLOWING FORMULA:

d = Xi – A

The direct method of computation of arithmetic mean can be used when the items in the series
are less. If items are more and figures are big, there would be difficulty in calculating the mean.
This difficulty can be solved by using the short-cut method. We can assume any figure as the
mean and deviations from this arbitrary mean is calculated. To get the arithmetic mean the total
of the deviations from assumed mean is calculated. This total is divided by the number of
observations and finally the product is added to the assumed mean.
STEP DEVIATION METHOD OF
MEAN
We can further simplify the short cut or assumed mean method. All
deviations taken by assumed mean are divided by common factor.

THE FOLLOWING IS THE FORMULA FOR FINDING MEAN WITH STEP DEVIATION METHOD:

And
C = class width
TYPES OF SERIES FOR
CALCULATION

INDIVIDUAL OR SINGLE SERIES:  individual series is the arrangement of raw

data individually

DISCREATE SERIES: Discrete series means where frequencies of a variable

are given but the variable is without class intervals

CONTINUOS SERIES:Continuous Series is a statistical series in which all the

class intervals along with their corresponding frequency are listed out in
the form of a table. All the class intervals may not have the same frequency.
QUESTIONS

QUESTION 1: calculate mean with the help of direct, assumed mean and

step deviation method from the following data:
50,54,56,58,59,60,61,62,65,75
(marks of 10 students)

QUESTION 2: The following table gives information about the marks

obtained by 110 students in an examination. use assumed mean

Class 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50

Frequency 12 28 32 25 13
